Left side carb keeps over flowing
17 Dec 2021 07:09
Ok so on my 82 kz440 I am having issues with the left side carb overflowing. I have set the floats to spec, and the float needle is brand new as of 3 days ago. It is not a horrible amount of fuel coming out of the over flow tube but over night there is probably the equivalent of a 1/2 a cup of fuel on the floor. I recently rebuilt the petcock and replaced all rubber gaskets in it. No leaks there. I really just don't understand this issue. The right side carb is set exactly like the left one and there is no issue at all.....any advice would be appreciated.

Check for cracks in the float bowl brass overflow tubes. If cracked, the tube can be replaced fairly easily using info posted either here or on the internet.

I'm gonna try something a bit unconventional to troubleshoot the issue. Im thinking if I swap the float needle and bowl to the right side carb and see if it leaks then I will know for sure that it is one of those 2 things. Is there an easy way to tell if that over flow tube is cracked? I'm beginning to think my floats are bad and may be have a pin hole in them or something. Idk. Ill have all day tomorrow to tear into it again. To be real honest I'm about tires of taking these carbs off....at this rate I'm gonna have to replace the boots again hahahahaha

Are the new float needles made by Kawasaki? If not, do you still have the original needles?

They are not oem kawasaki needles, they are keysters, I couldn't pull myself to spend $40 on one float needle through partzilla. Seemed a little steep. I do have the originals but they are worn on the tips.

Cracks in the overflow tubes are typically visible when you look close.

-Yes
Bowl off the carb. Drain screw open. A bit of rubber tubing on the drain nipple outlet. Finger over the top of the drain tube. Fill bowl with water and blow in the rubber tube
See any bubbles ?
Like looking for a puncture in a bicycle tube
And yes I have done this myself and it works

Check the fuel level with clear tube method. This should tell you if the carburetor is over flowing or if you have a cracked tube.
