Ok...back into the carbs again.  I swear I checked the diaphragms carefully each time I had them apart but lo and behold this time i find one with 3 little holes in it up near the top.  I saw a website for JBM industries... about $20 each.  It says you cut the plastic rings off completely and the new diaphragm installs without the rings.  Is this the way to go or is there a better option?  Not really concerned too much about the price.  I'm going to replace all 4 regardless.  Thanks.
Had I known I'd live this long I'd have taken better care of my Led Zeppelin albums

I've got spare slides w/good diaphragms.  PM me if you want one.  I'd stay OEM instead of go aftermarket but that's just me of course.

FWIW, I bought 6 of JBM's diaphrams for the 34 BS. 2 for my '80 XS 650SG and 4 for the carb rebuild for the 750 GPz engine. I've run the XS650 with them and work great.Where the cut out ring was, a thick "tire" to grab the "piston". There is no nub to keep the diaphram from rotating. Doesn't seem to be a problem in my experience. Very easy to install. Hardest part was removing that plastic ring!
I don't have a plan and I'm sticken' to it! '77 KZ 650 / 750 GPz custom project in progress
