1977 KZ1000 pilot jets

VM26 carbs were thoroughly cleaned and all passages are clear.  I can't really tell much if any rpm change when turning the pilot fuel screws all the way in or 3 turns out.  Maybe a tad rpm drop screwed all the way in .  Stock pilot is 17.5 1 1/4 out. Should I try a 15 pilot?  Stock box with stock exhaust. Idles very good at 1000 rpm and carbs are synched, new pilot screw o rings and no broken tips. Thanks for the help.

77 kz1000 had a 17.5 pilot jet according to the factory manual, why do you want to install a 15?

You might have fuel bypassing the choke plunger seals.

EDIT: For clarification do you have the pilot adjustment screws on the bottom of the carburetor between the bowl and the head?

If turning the pilot screw all the way in and makes no difference, then pilot is too rich and need leaner jet. If you screw pilot all the way out and it makes no difference then it's too lean and need larger pilot jet.  Seems it should make a difference in rpm.

Yes, pilot screws not air screws.

Manual says turn pilot screw until you get highest idle. Whether I go all the way in or out I can't tell a difference in highest rpm like supposed to.  All passages are clean and clear. Shouldn't turning the screw change idle rpm?

Yes, it should. Fuel must be getting in. If fuel pilot adjustments cause no change is rpm then fuel is getting into the engine. If you have OEM Mikuni 17.5 pilot jets then you have internal problems. Float levels to high, choke plunger seal, loose emulsion tube, or jets, missing needle jet. Something is letting fuel in. What do the plugs look like? It’s hard to believe it idles good.
