Accelerator Pump Rod Spring Broken

04 Apr 2021 11:12
#846116
Stupid spring gave up the ghost on the pull rod.  It was working okay before but all of a sudden...nothing.

Has anyone ever cracked open the tube and gotten inside one of these critterers?  I assume the brass cap on the end comes off somehow, but how?

Any help appreciated.

The brass cap is a nut with two little slots. You need fab a slotted screw driver or a little pipe socket with two small tips to unscrew the brass nut.

Actually, the brass eyelet threads into the tube.  There is then the spring and a plastic bushing.

Mikaw post=846153Cool, what’s broken?
When the eyelet was removed the rod slid right out.  The plastic sleeve was above the spring and both were shoved down into the tube.  I had to use a pick tool to pull them up, and it took considerable force.  The sleeve wouldn't come past the threads in the end of the tube though.  I had to shove a sharp wedge shaped tool inside the ID in order to get a bite in it so it could be spun out past the threads.

I'm a little unsure how this thing is supposed to be assembled.  It seems logical that the sleeve goes around the rod and then then the spring goes on next, but the sleeve won't slide in the tube bore so?  The way I assembled it is spring down the tube, then rod, then sleeve, then eyelet.  So the sleeve is acting as a spacer.  The rod springs nice and smooth so it seems okay but I'm still not sure it's right.

Awesome photo.  That's what I thought; the sleeve goes around the rod.  Looks like I have to pull mine apart again.  That stupid sleeve must have swelled up though.  Time for another lathe project...

Slide the sleeve on the rod, then the spring, then drop assembly into tube. Pull the rod down to allow the brass eye to start threading into the tube. I just noticed my set is missing the lower spring that goes below the cotter pin and the pump arm. I’ll have to find one before I rebuild this set.

Made a new bushing from delrin.  The old bushing was beyond saving.
