Hello Kawasaki crowd,

I have a very nice stock 1980 Sundance Blue KZ1000-B4 LTD with VM28SS Mikuni Carbs I've owned since 1983 (2nd owner). I've pulled the carbs for a thorough cleaning and replace any needed parts (float valves, O-rings etc.). Carbs had not been off in 11 years. The float levels appear to be very close to 5mm per fuel level marks on floats. Running stock airbox with OEM type K&N filter unit. Stock main jets are 105, pilot jets are 15, the floats measure at 25 mm from body and the pilot air screws were just shy of 1 turn out. It's always popped intermittently during warm up.

Does anyone have recommended jet changes or carb setup changes to optimize the stock settings? I assume it was setup lean from the factory due to emission regulations. Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Back stories: My LTD just survived (with minor damaged) an insane Derecho storm 8/10 which dropped a large tree crushing my carport where the LTD & my 1993 ZX11 D1 (owned since '95, 2nd owner) were sheltered. The ZX11 was totaled, but I will do my damnedest to bring her back. Of course I'd just finished detailing, carb service, tune up, valve adjust, plugs etc. The LTD I purchased from a brave Vietnam vet awarded the purple heart & still carrying the scars. I had to promise to take "very good care of her". Thank you Phil for your service, I'm holding to my promise. My ZX-11 was purchased from a Deputy Sheriff who admitted he was afraid of the bike after it unexpectedly stood up during hard acceleration.

The picture of LTD below taken 2 days prior to the storm, most trees in the picture were uprooted or heavily damaged. This park is now closed, the entire park is a dump site with giant piles of trees/debris.

I have the same bike. I think your floats are set a millimeter too lean. Should be 4 mm. Other than that your carbs sound pretty good. If you have a lot of miles on the bike you might want to replace your needles and needle jets, as the jets go oval over time from the rubbing action of the needle on the jet. Check your float valves, but if they are not currently leaking then they are probably OK. Lastly, the choke plungers may need attention. There is a guy here (zed1015) who rebuilds them.

Nice photos! Thanks for being such a kind caretaker all these years.
I have a couple of Z1B's restored, an '80 KZ1000LTD restored, a 1981 KZ550 restored and a 2008 KLR 650 for off road fun. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Welcome to the forum. I have a 1978 LTD 1000 and have installed the same VM28SS carbs. I love 'em. In my past experience with popping it has been due to air leaks from old cracked manifold boots.

You have a great looking bike. Thank you for taking on the custodial care of it. Even after 40 years I'm sure you will find it still has the ability to put a smile on your face.

What is wrong with the performance that you feel it needs to be rejeted?

The bike has 30,000 miles. No obvious tuning complaints, I've owned for long time and don't have similar bike to compare performance. I assume it left the factory with conservative fuel system setup. Installed new float needle valves & seats (Keyster) due to carb overflow if petcock was left on. Just set float height at spec. 4mm in reference to level marks/stains on floats (25 mm to body). Carb mounts were replaced OEM Kawasaki (are still soft and appear to seal) & was still intermittent popping during warm up. Needles and needle jets are original, do not see any noticeable wear. Just wondering if there is a well know adjustment to improve factory tuning.

Thank you for your reply and keeping the Z1 flame burning.

The Keyster Carb kit is incredibly complete and very high quality for $38/carb.

I used Keyster only because the used carbs I bought had no Main or Pilot jest. Made more sense money wise to buy the kits, Aslo i like the rubber bowl caskets. I used FK-5394N

Not sure my jetting will help because I have K&N pods filters and a Vance and Hines 4 to 1. I currently run 15 Pilots and 113 Mains. I m going to up the pilots to 17.5. I noticed how crisp and sharp throttle response is when cold on choke. I think the pilots might need one size bigger.

As you are running stock parts for the bike aside from carbs? the only thing to ask is are the carbs the pumper type if so take the pilot jet up one size as they are lean from the factory, i run a b2 with 26mm pumpers with non stock exhaust and have the needles on middle slot, 107.5 mains, 20 pilots, and the second diaphragm removed and plugged so they work like the 28mm pumpers.

The pilots will be 20's.
You will never have a pilot bigger than the main.
