1982 GPz airbox question, never seen one like this
22 Aug 2020 10:00
Hi,
I'm new to this board, first post, but need some help with an '82 GPz550 I'm getting back on the road. Basically, I can't figure out where the filter enclosures for the airbox may have come from and I'm trying to OEM type filters. I can make them, if needed, but would like to keep this thing as close to original as possible.
Anyone recognize? Maybe non-US market or something? The center section of the box appears to be correct for an '82 US bike, but I'm no expert!.
Thanks

We have never seen one either because you didn’t post any pictures or a way for anyone to help you identify the item your describing.

When uploading to KZR, maybe you didn't click the Insert button. ???
Here's the air cleaner diagram for the 550-H1. It is rather unusual.
There are several air filters on EB. Z1Enterprises.com has a K&N version as well >> it appears to be a washable oem type.

Hmmm...yes, I'm new to this forum and was unable to review my post before the moderator put it up, I must have missed something.
Anyhow, let's try this again. Notice the air filter is not 360 degree like a normal '82-83 GPz550, so no replacements are direct fit. I was curious as to where this air filter case may have come from.
Thanks

I can't see your photos, but the stock airbox for the 82-83 Gpz550 (H models) is about the goofiest airbox I've ever seen. There's a main filter feeding the left side of the box and little tiny supplemental filter feeding the right side. It's very asymmetrical...doesn't seem intuitive.

No idea why I was having issues getting a picture to post, but editing allowed. Thanks, Matt, for the assist in the meantime..
So, there you have it. I've never seen another.

Looks like something made by an aftermarket company for that bike.
Do you still have the little triangle filter on the other side of the airbox?

I've attached a couple of additional pics, this time both air filter enclosures.
The strange, triangle side has the right filter shape, but I think the "snorkel" may be different than most. The right side is definitely different, with that strange filter shape. Also, the back side looks different. I can't imagine this stuff is anything other than OEM, based on fit/finish, but you never know.

I guess this one is going to remain a mystery, but I did want to add a final picture. The enclosures are very different. Both appear OEM. No idea
The center airbox to which either attaches is a normal KHI part number, fwiw. Strange.

Looks like an air/power restrictor for the air filter/engine. Some countries like Germany has special insurance classes for beginner bikes with power down grades. After two years of probation period you can ride without any restrictions of the engine power.
