Hello everyone. Hope everyone is doing ok. Crazy world today. My thoughts and prayers to anyone with struggles or health issues.
So I'm going to talk about a subject that has been beat to death.lol. my bike spits through the carberator. More cold than once it warms up. I know it could be a number of things from what I've read.. I'm open for suggestions. But what I'm really after is if someone knows anyone who is a good mechanic and really knows these bikes, and who lives in maryland. Please let me know. I have a 1977 kz 1000. I just purchased it and I would really like it looked at and fixed. Thank you Mitch

Spitting back is a sign of a weak mixture or air leaks on the rubber inlet boots and also possibly valve leakage due to worn valves/seats or over tight valve clearances.
I'm in the UK so can't help you with a mechanic local to you.

Oh wow. Thank you. I do know this much about the bike. The engine has ten thousand miles and it sat for years. The place I'm buying it from is out of town. I know they took the carbs apart and cleaned them. I'm willing to put money into this bike to get it running right. Do you have any idea what a valve job would cost. I'm happy for you being in the UK the U.S. is a mess

At 10k miles the motor is very low mileage for the year..
If it's been sat a long time the chances are that one or more valves has corrosion on them and they aren't seating fully.
I have no idea of US prices for the work though or UK ones either as i do all my own work.
The UK isn't that great, believe me.

Yes your prolly right. Good tip. Unfortunately I'm not in the position right now to work on my own bike. And these bigger dealers in my area refuse to work on anything before 81. I'll get it figured out, but thanks for pointing me in a direction to check. Mitch

Hi Mitch. Welcome to the forum. I agree with Zed1015, I chased a similar issue on a ‘78 1000 Ltd... turned out to be the rubber manifolds. You don’t need to spend big bucks on NOS OEM, but don’t go to the $40 sets off evilbay either... get them from a good vender. RedLine Cycle, Z-power UK, a quality set should run in the $70 to $80 range... makes a huge difference and hopefully is a low dollar investment that will solve your problem.

Your new here but I wanted to let you know Zed1015 is the go to guy for carbs. The was the right guy to answer your question.

Its A really nice looking bike and motor. Wanna get it running the best it can. Thanks for the tip. I love your kz by the way. I had mine painted black with the gold pin stripes. Its in ohio right now..Im trying to figure out a cost effective way to get it back to maryland. This weekend hopefully. I will take pics. and post them when I get her home. Mitch, thanks for the compliment... I’ve spent quality hours detailing it with a little more coming this fall... Your spot on with the help offered here... I’ve said several times, the members here don’t want to just help you get your bike running, they want to help you get it running top notch... that way we all experience the full joy of theses wonderful vintage machines... I feel you pain about transportation, I have a 1977 Kz1000 A2 roller in Minnesota that I need to have shipped...

Spit back through carb when warming up and at low rpm on my 750 was caused by cracks in these thingies

Not always obvious but easy to spot if checked carefully.

They dont last forever. I have replaced them twice in 17 years
