Tuning Help
28 Jul 2020 07:59
Hi All, Im having some tuning issues after a recent rebuild. Carbs are RS34's with Emgo pods and were running lean at first. Revs were hanging bad. I upped the pilots from 17's to 20's and put the factory airbox back on. Rev hanging was fixed but now I'm rich. So rich the plugs are black and sooty after a ride and the bike is hard to start unless I clean them off.
Anyone have a recomentation on my next move? I was thinking a K&N drop-in but I dont want to just spend money and hope it fixes the issue.

You need to decide if your keeping the factory air box or going back to pod filters... if your keeping airbox then go back to factory primary and main jets... if you want pods then it’s dealers choice on jets size... maybe start with one up on the pilot and stock on the main and tune from there... make sure what ever pod filters you buy that they do not cover any air passage on the carb intake throat... toss the Emgo!

Thanks Mikaw,
I was hoping to get away with not having to spend $$$ on K&N pods. Know of any other brands that do not block the passages? Google searches never reveal the inner throat of the pod.

I think for general riding, you can't beat the airbox. The engineers who designed it did a pretty good job with the runner lengths to satisfy a wide range of rpm and load. Bikes with airboxes are way easier to tune.
Just my 0.02
good luck

I have no direct experience with 50mm filters... but I do have and have good luck with the APE 42mm... personally I’d trust APE.

these are sold as a package with the RS34 carbs so I’d feel they would be a good set to check out and research...

I think I should share my engine build, 1135cc with ported bathtub head and K410 cams. Breathes with Mikuni RS34's and V&H header. Th original factory jetting was too lean and causing the revs to hang. Enrichening the pilot and putting the 100% stock airbox back on fixed the problem but now im rich and fouling plugs.
I would like to keep the factory airbox and was hoping a K&N drop in would provide enough air to solve the 'too rich' problem. But if it doesnt then I've wasted $ buying the drop in and have to buy pods anyways.

This guy right here. Just a K&N version of the factory filter. Z1 enterprises sells them at a fraction of the price of pods.

I realize nobody can tell me how a particular filter will affect my particular bike. So I guess I would like to know techniques for subtly leaning the air fuel mixture,
Hi Flow filter?
Removing Exhaust baffle?
Going up a size on pilot air jet?
Drilling a huge hole in the side of the airbox? (sarcasm)
Or just bite the bullet and buy K&N pods...
