Just wrapped up cleaning out my carbs. I was blasting out some of the orifices with compressed air to aid in drying so I could reassemble as soon as possible. The float bowls have the channel from the accelerator pump up to the brass squirter inside the venturi. I blasted some air up the fuel line from the accel. pump and it shot the little brass weight, ball, and clip clean out. I heard it ricochet against the wall but couldn't find a single part of it. Now I'm stuck with the dilemma of either a) ordering an entire accelerator pump rebuild kit or b) running without the little weight thing.

My question is first: what will happen if I just run it without the weight and ball in one of the bowls? Is it really going to cause issues? 3/4 float bowls are intact and functional. Would I notice one not having the little weight and ball??

For reference, I'm talking about parts number 12,13, and 14 in this diagram: www.kawasaki.com/Parts/PartsDiagram/143241/1980/KZ650-F1

Thanks!

I would think the little parts would be necessary so that all four nozzles squirt the same. I think the ball & weight prevent the fuel from draining back down into the pump so that the nozzles are always primed w fuel. You could rig up a carb stand & temporary fuel supply, then vigorously actuate the throttle pulley to compare what happens. Fuel should squirt out each nozzle the same without hitting the carb bore walls.

edit: Z1Enterprises.com has a K&L kit. The kit from RedlineCycle & elsewhere is probably the same.

I'd REALLY like to not spend $30 just to get such a tiny part that seems pretty inconsequential. Anyone think this could be ok just as is? (really hunting for justification here if you can't tell :))

If not, I guess I'll just suck it up and buy a kit

If the parts were inconsequential they wouldn't be in there.
The ball etc are an essential part of the pump system and act as a one way valve.
You could get a big magnet and sweep the area where you lost the parts.
Otherwise you will have to buy the bits that are missing or the carbs won't work correctly.
The other option is to disable the pumper system entirely but then you may still have to spend out on additional jets to correct the fueling and spend more time and money changing them till you get it sorted and then maybe have to take it to a shop and pay them to sort it out after it still won't run right.
I know what I would do .

I thought a sign of a good mechanic was having parts left over.

Scirocco, you amaze me with the parts you find!!!

So thanks for the advice. You’re all probably right.

But I have to tell of my success story here. I was so bugged by this that I got my 6 and 4 yr old kids this morning after stewing over this all night and told them we had a quest to do today. They got pumped, naturally, that we were on a quest. So we (I) moved everything in the half of my garage where I heard these bits fly when I hit them with air. Swept every corner. One by one they found all three pieces! I owe these tots an ice cream or something. Still amazed they found the little clip.

Wow. Even with my luckiest days of finding parts that dropped or shot out into nowhere, I wouldn't have thought finding your parts was even a remote possibility.

Luck helps, but nothing beats having a small army of minions to do the dirty work. :)
