Mikuni carbs Z400 was created by sakafest@hotmail.co.uk
Hi has anybody tried these bad boys on a Z400 0r Z440? i would be interested in there results, and can you still fit your side panels when these carbs are installed? I have seen a few Z400 with the two into one carb only, cant say i am impressed with the results.

32mm carbs are to damn big for a stock KZ440.
30mm carbs are also too big for a stock bike.
Unless you do all your riding above 7000 ft. 28mm is all you need.
A 28mm carb will support 25 h.p.. I don't think there are to many
50 h.p. KZ440 running around.

Hi again, Speedmo U.S. have give me a price of $399 plus carriage and duty for 28mm Mikunis which was expected. I am now having a look at refurbish my existing stock carbs for now. Do know if there are any updated carb kits available for my stock keihin carbs or are they swop out kits only?

cheers,
Mick

What year carbs? Rubber diaphragm-slide, or piston-slide?

If the bike is 77/78 diaphragm carbs, you probably won't be able to find new diaphragms.

I'm working on a Kz400 using Chinese replica VM30 carbs. They have worked surprisingly well even though we haven't fully rejetted them yet. We only did a quick preliminary jetting and ran out of time last year and things have been crazy this year, so far. I did have a blast riding the bike around last fall and it screamed, but the warm-up period was long and rough. I hope to get back to them after we fix a few other problems caused by the previous owner.

I think the carbs only cost about $75 for two. Plus we had to buy a throttle cable with splitter and modify the length of the split cables. Then we put on the cheap disposable pods and they seemed to work great... no mess either. We replaced the intake boots as well. We might have been about $150 to $200 total for the entire carb swap.

Here's the thread.

thanks for replying, its a 1982 KZ440ltd with diaphragms, not sure the condition yet, going to remove them next week and take a peek. Speedmo do a package which includes all cables, jetted, pods and boots but it is still double what you have paid. The bike itself as you can see needs very little work, i have swopped the seat back to the original seat and thats all. I just need to sort the carbs out. I did have the z400 back in the 70s from new, so when this one came up for sale i decided to take it on

I think JB industries makes diaphragms for your bike. Yes, much simpler if you can get the stock setup working.

EDIT: JBM industries, not JB industries.

That shows an OD of 68mm.
JBM industries lists a 440 at 71mm.
jbmindustries.com/Dimensions.html

Have you actually measured the OD of the groove diameter?

The earlier Kz400 slide diaphragms were 72mm. I haven't measured the later 400 and 440 carbs.

I just replaced my worn out diaphragms with the ones from JBM. They work great and install pretty simply. Definitely recommend those over the cheap ones on eBay. One of my diaphragms was a cheap replacement from eBay and it didn't have the keyway that points forward like the factory one did. Also seems quite a bit stiffer. I could never get it to seat right in top of the carb either. The JBM diaphragms fit perfectly and require much less effort to get seated. They are also supposed to be more ethanol resistant too.
