Petcock get new or rebuild? was created by Dangerdan
Hi all
New here with a question that’s probably been asked.
I have a 1979 kz1000 Ltd . Petcock is leaking . It’s the two bolt bolt in type vacuum petcock. When I look at the parts diagrams for 1979s the are the bung type. So how do I figure out who rebuild kit or new petcock I need?
Thanks

Hi Dan,
Did you attach five pictures and only two of them displayed? Or are the two that displayed two of the three "You Do Not Have..." messages?
I'm trying to learn some work arounds to manage the issue.
Thanks
Bill

Perhaps the tank is from a 1981 or later LTD. If so, new rubber parts should be easy to source.

The KZ1000B fuel tank is similar to the KZ1000A, so it could be from one of those >> the 78-80 A models had a vacuum petcock. There are two different petcock part numbers, but the rebuild parts are the same. I would take it apart beforehand to at least make sure it isn't a weird one with the unusual top hat diaphragm found on some early KZ650s.

Replacement petcock. If the bolt hole spacing is 44mm, then I think you could get a new petcock from a late model KZ1000P police motorcycle. I'm pretty sure their spacing is the same, but you should verify. New complete oem units should be available. #51023-1375

Don't the petcocks for the J engined bikes have only a single fuel outlet? Should be easy enough to split the line, though..

I would take the one you have apart and inspect the interior, especially the seat for the oring seal. If the seat is pitted, it is time for a new one. If you decide to rebuild, be sure to polish that seat and the inside face of the selector lever.

No mention of model and year of the bike in question. No worry though, go to Partzilla (or your favorite OEM parts source) and look to see if petcock rebuild parts are still available. If they are then it's worth a try. Crack the unit open before ordering though and look for damage/corrosion. If OEM parts are not available I recommend getting a new OEM petcock (if available.) Aftermarket petcock rebuild kits pretty much universally suck, and aftermarket petcocks sometimes do to.

Partzilla shows the 1977 KZ1000 A1 , 1978 KZ1000 A2 and A2A, had dual fuel lines, while the later ones had a single fuel line, suggesting the op's tank and fuel tap are from an early A series. If so, only one of the rubber bits is still available there.
