I put a new plug in cylinder 2, started and let idle for 5 minuets. Pulled the plug and it was covered with black soot, just like the one before.
Choke is off and pilot screw turned all the way in. Pilot jet is stock size #35. Air box, air filter, and exhaust are stock.
Also, these carburetors have 2 main jets, a #85 under the needle and a #62 by its self. How does this set up work?

Is there a rubber plug that is supposed to cover the port feeding the pilot jet? If that is missing, the pilot circuit may get too much fuel.

Yes, the plug is there. At least it was when I cleaned the carbs a couple weeks ago. Are the plugs known to fall out?

I'm not sure on the 305. On the 400's that have them, the clip sometimes moves during assembly and they could potentially fall out right as the bowl is being installed if it's being done upright.

The plug was out. This is a Suzuki plug I had installed because I could not find the proper plug. It was too short and did not contact the tab in the bottom of the float bowl that is meant to hold it in place.
I modified the plug to make it longer. Screwed a small screw in the plug, left it stick up about 1/8th inch, and pressed an 8mm long piece of fuel hose over it. I believe this is how long the plug should have been.
Also, the main nozzle that is under the secondary main jet was buggered up. It looks like a slot was cut in its face where the jet contacts. I was able to find a replacement on e-bay and will wait for it to arrive before putting things back together.
Any suggestions on where I might get the correct rubber plugs?

You are looking for part number 16012-1001. They call it a "cap, rubber".

Looks like it was also used on some 400's, 250's, maybe even a 1000.

That part number did not come up on my ebay search.

This Amazon page in Japan seemed to have them at some point. There is a photo of one, if you think that is what you need.

If you can't get the exact one, you will probably be able to use something from another bike, but that will take some research.
You should try to get measurements for the plug you need.

How are your float levels?
Are your exhaust pipes the same temp at the head?

I'm having a similar issue on my '82 and I am definitely not getting the same temp on each pipe coming out of the head. Black soot on plug. When I rev it up, it seems to fire on the questionable cylinder more reliably, but if I pull the plug on the other cylinder the bike won't run. If I pull it on the misfiring cylinder it will stay running. I've loosened the screw on each bowl and gas comes out. As you might imagine, pressure out of the exhaust pipes is not equal, especially at idle.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationFixed! The PO rebuilt the carbs with I suspect this cheap China carb kit and did not have rubber plugs over the pilot jets.

With this set up, it was way to rich and sooted up the plugs. When I installed rubber plugs it was way to lean, even with the pilot screw out 4.5 turns.
I ordered new pilot jets from jetster.com and tested flow rate before installing. Although both the cheap jets and the Jetster jets were #35 and both had a hole diameter of .011", the Jestster jets flowed at almost double the rate as the cheap jets.
Now with new pilot jets, It is idling fine with pilot screw at 1.5 turns.
Now , I may be ordering new needles and needle jets. I had to jack up needles .085" to correct bogging down on easy acceleration and mid speed surging. It looks like they were included in the kit too.

Thanks for the update and for taking the time to confirm what several members here have been preaching about crappy Chinese carb kits.
