Fuel tap size: 44mm or 45mm?
22 Feb 2020 09:38
Hello
I know this isn't a carb-related topic, but I hope "fuelling" is close enough.
I made the mistake of buying a 34mm fuel tap for my KZ550 LTD tank. I assumed it was the right standard size, as my GT550 takes a standard 34mm-between-the-holes fuel tap. However, it isn't the right size. Yes, I can get an NOS OEM fuel tap for this tank, but it isn't worth the asking price or the waiting time.
I measured the space between the holes on the tank, and I make them 45mm apart. However, I don't have calipers for measuring this precisely.
Some bikes (made by other manufacturers) use fuel taps that are said (going by the ads) to have 45mm between the holes. In other cases, the ads say 44mm between the holes.
Anyone know for sure the size of fuel tap I need for this tank? I will be looking for a manual fuel tap for this project, but if all I can get is an automatic one, then I'll grab one of those. Thanks

AFAIK, KZ petcocks are either 34mm or 44mm. My 81 KZ650-CSR is 34mm, but the later CSRs & earlier 650s are 44mm.

Cheers. Looks like I'll either be going with a Suzuki 44mm automatic fuel tap, or just make a blanking plate with an 8mm spigot so I can fit an inline fuel tap then.
44mm manual fuel taps aren't easy to come by here in the UK, it seems. It's a shame, because I just don't believe in automatic fuel taps, but oh well.

Pingle makes an adapter plate so you can use one of their petcocks.
