VM26 Question

04 Oct 2019 05:20 - 04 Oct 2019 05:20
#811759
Hello,

I have a set of VM26 carburetors at home, that have both fuel and air mixture screws. Sadly the air screws threads are destroyed. So I re tapped the threads to a different size and closed off the hole with a larger bolt. Will this work? Because I know that some variants of the VM26 carburetors only came with the fuel screw.

When I get home today, I should have the carbs ready to be installed back onto the bike. but I am wondering if this is even possible?
FYI: Its for a KZ750, 4to1 and pods

Thanks
Yuriy

Early VM26 carbs had only a fuel/air screw located on the side of the body. Later versions had only a pilot screw located underneath on the front. They usually had no fuel/air screw adjustment...only the pilot screw. The port on the side was never drilled.

I wasn't aware that some VM26 carbs came with both adjustments. If you still have the pilot screw on the bottom front then I think you will be OK with the fuel/air screw blocked off.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

It is my understanding that the vm26 carbs that came stock on some of the Suzuki's did have both and air and pilot screw. I would think that as long as the air screw passage is closed the carbs should work. Just do not use a bolt too long, as it could close off air to the pilot circuit.

Here what I did, The bolt isn't long enough to block the air passage. I haven't had time yesterday to put the carbs back on.

What you did is equivalent to having the pilot air screw wide open, leaning the mixture.

I know, I had no other options besides completely closing the passage. However, it should still work though, HOPEFULLY.

When faced with a similar stripped thread problem I was able to repair the carb body using a custom made brass bushing. The carb body was first reamed to make the hole round and then the bushing, with internal threads for the pilot screw, was pressed in place. Worked perfectly.

You may need to go up one size on the pilot jet to help with the lean mix.
