Throttle Cables Open and Closed was created by Rick H.
Perhaps someone can clear something up for me. I want to order new throttle cables for my 1977 Kawasaki KZ-1000. In the Kawasaki parts manual it lists two cables with two different parts numbers. One cable is part #54012-149 and the other is #54012-150. My confusion comes in because both cables are listed as "opening cable" and not closing cable. Can anyone tell me which part number would be for the closing cable? Thanks in advance for any help....

With the kz650s, which have a similar set up; an opening and a closing cable, I believe only one cable is now available, and used to do both jobs.
Check a Kawasaki dealer in your area with your part #s for availability, or Z1Enterprises.com

On Kawasaki bikes with an opening and closing cables. The higher part number is the closing cable. 54012 just means its a throttle cable. -149 is opening cable. -150 is the closing cable. The main difference is the radius of the curve of the metal piece that threads into your right hand switch body. If you have two cables with the same radius metal piece you cannot thread the second cable into the switch body without running into your opening cable.. That is why the closing cable has a wider radius curve so you can thread it into the switch body without running into the metal piece on your opening cable.

I think the photos below will explain what I am trying to explain!!

Bad news for you, I just ran a parts check on your two cables. Both show as NLA from Kawasaki Motors!!!!!

He might be able to find NOS oem cables on eebbaayy.

ps: both of them being listed as opening cables is probably just an error. The 54012-150 cable is also used on the 1000E Shaft & it's listed as a closing cable in the 1000E diagrams.

I use only OEM cables for my Z1's and they are still available. Different number...so perhaps different length.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

I checked, the Z1 cables 54012-081, and 54012-087, are still available from Kawasaki. I bet those Z1 cables are within a 1/2 inch of being the same length of the Kz1000 cables!!!! I used to sell the Z1r cables 54012-1018 and 54012-1019, for both the Z1's and the Kz900/1000's when the owners went to K&N Superbike bars on their bikes. So all those cables should be interchangeable!!
