KZ750 What Carburetor should I Go With?
07 Jun 2019 05:36
Morning Everyone
Here's my setup and things done so far
-Chassis is KZ650
-Engine is KZ750EE 1982
-Wire harness is from KZ550 1982
-39mm Air pod filter
-4to1 exhaust
-New ignition coil with spark plugs
-New oil of course
-valve clearance adjusted
-manual cam chain tensioner installed
- Carbs are VM22 with main jet 102.5 and pilot jet of 15
-Can't find any air leaks anywhere
So, I have been struggling tuning the carburetor for a awhile. When I had the bike running the main jet circuit ran perfectly fine. However, the engine also had problems idling, I always had to play around with the idle adjust screw to lower the RPMs
I know that people often put a Kawasaki 750CC motor into the KZ650 chassis, BUT What the hell are their crab setups. Does anyone know if they stay with the original CV carburetor? Because I have a set at home, I just need to buy the intake carb holder for them and then tune them. Just remember I have very little clearance with the KZ650 chassis. Or do they use a different Carb setup, like the VM24s or what? If anyone has any suggestion please let me know.
I am willing to buy a new set of used carburetors for the bike, next paycheck. However, I do not know what setup to go with
So, When I was tuning the VM22s, I went from size #15 to #17.5 to #20 and then to #30 pilot jets. Surprisingly, I was able to turn the motor over on all pilot sizes however I believe I was just running very rich most of the time. And this tells me that there might be something wrong with my carburetors.
BTW, I live in the suburbs of Chicago, IL
Thanks,

The KZ650 normally came with VM24 carbs, but to comply with smog regs in 1978 some came with VM22 carbs. Those bikes made a bit less horsepower than the ones with the VM24 carbs. Since they were a bit small on the KZ650 engine it's possible that the VM22 carbs are a little too small on your KZ750 engine. If it was mine I would try to find the type of carbs that originally came on the KZ750 engine. Ed

What Ed said, I would find a set of VM26 carbs. Go with 17.5 pilot jets and 105 main jets. That should get you a good starting point to tune from.

Okay, I will start looking for a set of VM26 Carbs.
On Ebay I found a set of VM26 What do you guys think about this set? Looks like it needs a deep cleaning, Only is they were a tad cheaper. Besides the cleaning part, Will this set fit into the KZ750 intake ports?

I think you will need some early 1000 boots but they may not bolt up to the head without modification (elongation) to the bolt holes. And even if you can make the boots fit, there may be center to center carb spacing issues with putting the carbs on your bike.

No real fitment issues, the carb spacing on the 900, 1000, 750 and 650 are the same. Get yourself a set of new kz900 carb boots and like Nessism said elongate the mouting holes bolt them on and thats it.

Scirocco,
Thanks for pointing that out. should of went for the KZ style Carbs, but couldn't find any at the time.
Anyways, Should I go for pod filters, uni filters, or velocity stacks. And what are the differences between each other. I was thinking going for velocity stacks however this is not going to be a track bike though.
Feel free to post some links of your recommendations for the VM26 filters?
