Choke lever problem
17 Apr 2019 12:47
Hi again guys..
Well I think I might have sorted my start up problem...I'll know in the morn when the engines cold..
While messing with it this evening using carb cleaner to start it again I noticed a lot of play in the choke lever ...nearly half way up before it engages the lifters ... I'm wondering could I spot a bit of weld with a tig welder on the lever and shaft to eliminate the play? Or is that too risky ??
Thanks again guys

DonĀ“t be so stupid!!! Check the screws for the plunger lifters are tight on the linkage shaft and there is no slack between the both parts.
The linkage shaft has a groove machined in where the screw of the plunger lifter has to fit in.

Hi scirocco
The problem with mine is where the shaft protrudes through the actual choke lever on the outside ... sorry if I wasn't clear about the description

The lifter forks are fairly soft metal also. Make sure when the choke is fully off the forks are sitting against the underside of the top of the collar, part number 49 on scirocco's diagram.
I would try something a bit less drastic than weld first, maybe take the shaft off and tighten the joint between shaft and lever by burr the end over with a hammer or some kind of glue, jbweld? If you do resort to a spot weld do it when off the carb rack.

Warren is right, the "Choke" hand leveler is fabricated like a rivet on the linkage shaft.
Some light hits will expand the shaft and should give him a tighter fit to hand leveler.
But some light TIG dot welding should fix your problem also a last Resort.

Thanks Warren
Is it a big job to pull out that shaft with the lever handle on it ?

Remove/Loosen part #35, 36 <---on all carbs, 38, 39, 70, 71 and you can pull the shaft out.
