I use a cheap hand held blaster with my underpowered air compressor and baking soda from the grocery store to clean my carbs. It will wipe oxidation right off the carbs and will brighten the surface. (It also works stunningly well at removing carbon from aluminum heads and pistons.) Plus the baking soda won’t plug any passages in the carbs as it instantly dissolves when washed with water.
Don’t fall for the Pine-sol soak. It works, but it also etches the crap out of the aluminumn and your carbs will always look dark and dull. It also will strip any zinc coatings off of plated parts!

I soda blasted off black spray paint off these. (But not the spigots) If I had a better air compressor I could get even better results.

Once they are cleaned good you need to coat them with something to protect them from new oxidation reforming .
I use WD-40

I have one of those cheapies blasters. 20 bucks @ HF (the personal info collectors). Down side is the freakin MESS. Upside is that sodium bicarbonate washes away with the rain and is environmentally and engine friendly.

I also second the caution to avoid the pine sol dip. Nasty stuff, and makes your carbs grey permanently. Will not blast off and removes the sealers / coatings used for the porosity in the cast aluminum.

Not very aggressive, but you do not want "aggressive" on carb bodies.

Harbor Freight sells large bags of soda. I used some to clean a cylinder head since I was afraid of blast media like glass bead going into blind oil passages. Even though we are talking soda here I still advocate plugging all the various openings; yes, the soda will dissolve with water but it's not an immediate process. And don't blast in your yard unless you don't care about the grass dying (don't ask me how I know).
