Air filter box replacement found but looking for opinions

First post here even though I've been lurking for some time. I bought a 1982 kz 440 about 3 years ago or so and I drove it for a summer before it started acting really funny. Come to find out the guy who owned the thing before me fancied himself a blacksmith and totally mangled the air filter snorkel, including stick welding in a segment of expandable mesh in there . The bike acted real funny for a long while and I've had it stored for another issue. Now I'm finally looking to get my hands dirty and get this thing up and running again, lo and behold someone's making replacement snorkels for the thing. Anyway I've been popping in here from time to time looking at solutions to this problem since I found the issue (home made air filter boxes, going with pods etc.) and I wanted your opinion on this thing, have any of you used one? airbox snorkel

also if anyone wants to see the mangled original let me know.

How do you weld wire mesh to plastic? Post a pic.

I am sure it could be done with any plastic welding outfit, or even a solder gun and small chunk of broken plastic similar to the box. Outcome is likely rather ugly.
Pics would be entertaining if not altogether enlightening.

Heres the abomination, maybe I’m not naming the part correctly but its the airfilter holder, maybe this thing is entirely homemade. I'm fairly confident that it is.

I haven't looked at this thing in about 2 years so I completely forgot how rough it actually was.

You can not weld plastic and metal.
Forty years ago I did do a number on some of my model cars with a wood burner, if you remember those.

I do remember those models, still have 2 or 3 unbuilt.

Clearly it would not be welding in any real sense of the word, just melting enough plastic through and over the mesh to hold it in place. I suspect that vibration would eventually overcome it.

That snorkel looks like it is being 3D printed. Good to see people are stepping up and redoing parts for these old bikes.

$80 seems like a lot but I'll tell you from someone who is trying to get a non-stock airbox to run properly that $80 seems like a steal. :)
