78 650B high idle with choke on
20 Jul 2018 16:51
Hey folkfs, thanks for your attention first of all.
I have a 78 kz650 with a fresh rebuilt motor. My issue is with tuning.
The bike has quad air pods and quad straight pipes. The carbs have been jetted 3 times with 3 different sizes ranging from factory size up to 120. Right now it has been jetted back to factory.
When i kick the bike over, it will only start with the choke on. When I start it, if even slightly push the choke off or lightly turn the throttle it immediately stalls out. I believe it's running to lean. Way to lean. My question is, will there be any tuning configuration I can do with the current set up with straight pipes and air pods or will i have to baffle the exhaust for a more factory liking for the carbs?
I have heard people being able to run straight pipes and air pods but if that's the case what kind of netting do i need in the carbs?
Thank you in advance

Did you just try 3 different main jet combinations? What did you do with the pilot jetting?
Also make sure the lip inside your pods isnt blocking any ports on the carb when they slide on.

Are you running on all cylinders? Sounds like it has been to lean and got hot and blown a few sparkplugs?
I am jetting my own at the moment and experienced what you decribed.

When I ran with pods, and a Kerker 4 into1, my 650 carbs had 112.5 main jets and 15 pilots.
I'm guessing you will need larger still, 115 mains and 17.5 pilots.
