Carb sync question. was created by Troubled1
I pulled my carbs last night as I had fuel coming out of the airbox. I pulled the floats and blew through the inlet to clear any debris that may have gotten in.

I re-installed the carbs and now the idle jumped to 3200rpm. I wasn’t able to lower it with the idle screw but was able to lower it by turning in my sync screws. While I had the carbs on the bench the butterflies were closed almost all the way as I hadn’t adjusted the idle screw at all.

I my question is, should I turn in the sync screws to attain an idle low enough to be controlled by the idle adjustment screw and then proceed with syncing or do you think there may be another problem that warrants removing the carbs again for further inspection? I also checked all the pilot jets and blew out the passages. Everything was clean and clear.

Check throttle idle stop and throttle cable routing and play.
Don´t play with the sync screws to lower the idle, more problems to come later.

The throttle stop can be backed right out and it doesn’t(didn’t) affect the idle. The throttle cable has some freeplay and snaps back easily. Turning the sync screw between 1/2 carbs lowered the ide enough that I can control it with the idle adjustment screw but number 2 carb shows only about 1-3in/hg. Possible vacuum leak??

Definitive an air leak = lean air/fuel.
Check the sliders/diaphramas

For shits and giggles I decided to check the fuel level in the float bowls using the clear tube method. 1,3 and 4 are perfect. #2 is dry. I have a sneaking suspicion I put that float back in upside down :pinch:
I’ll be taking them off again and I’ll fix the issue, bench sync, check the carb to head boots for cracks/leaks and re-install. I’ll update later.
Damn I feel like an ass.

I got everything back together. Sure enough the float in #2 carburetor was in wrong. I did a bench sync put it all back together and it fired up instantly. The vacuum sync shows I got it pretty close on the bench so in the morning I’ll finish tuning it up.

Finally I have it all synced, idle issue fixed and float levels good. Now the fun part. Giving it a test ride.

When cold the bike fires up instantly with the choke. After a short warm up I can ride it ok and it isles fine at 1100rpm. After riding for a while when I shut it off it’s hard to restart. I have the pilot screws out 2 1/2 turns. At 3 turns there is a lot of popping in the exhaust. The float levels are within spec using the clear tube method and there aren’t any leaks between the carbs and cylinder head. Any suggestions ?

When I say hard to start, I mean it sometimes will fire up if I feather the throttle slightly. If it doesn’t start right away, it takes several seconds of cranking while giving it a bit of throttle.
