KZ650 VM24SS fuel level was created by Saablord
Can someone look at a 1979 KZ650 LTD/custom model service manual for the dry float measurement for the vm24ss carbs (non accelerator pump)?

I've scoured google and i've read so many different levels...30mm...18mm....24mm they were set to around 24/25 so i'm guessing that's what it should be as i'd have to bend them up real good to get 30 or 18mm.

I've never had the best results from the "dry" setting, but the FSM I have for the 81 650 says 23 mm +/- 1 mm. I've never had an 81, or a 79, but I've used that on the 77 I had here a while ago. I prefer the wet test using the glass tube, though....

It should be the same for non-accelerator pump VM24's.....

Ok, thanks. I'll do a dry setting and then shove a piece of tubing in the drains to double check. I wish they had the combined overflow and drain nipple like the 550 carbs i had.

I meticulously set all four floats to exactly the same height specified in the manual. then did the service fuel level check. they were all wrong. So I had to do the whole thing all over again. doh.

I made a carb stand to speed up the process & used a funnel & tubing as an auxiliary fuel supply. I also rigged a simple float bracket support to speed up adjusting the tangs. instead of bending the tangs, i flexed flexed flexed them x-number of times, then rechecked the fuel level. I was able to set all 4 floats to exactly 3.0 mm below the carb body.

also, for removing the floats, I set up a box w heavy towels to have a good spot to hold the carburetors.
some guys use only 1 screw to hold the float bowl in place while checking the fuel level, but I used 2.

Par for the course.

Enlightened tuners know that it's the fuel level that ultimately matters, and that the "float height" should be adjusted to whatever setting produces the correct fuel level.

Just an update:

I left them at 25mm as I had set them before and then cursed up a storm as I used these plug style fuel bowls to measure the service levels (engine paint now ruined...). 3 of 4 were some how spot on with the other one being way over. Dunno how I got that lucky and I certainly didn't expect the dry method to work so well. I'm guessing the dry level will change over time as the floats degrade.

Anyways, the new carbs work fantastic. Thanks again
