Jets for VM29 smooth on 810cc was created by Olocin
Hi,

So I'm more of a quite reader, but now I'm unsure about which size of jets is right.
I'm in the phase of finishing my motor which has got the wiseco 810cc kit installed with a gpz750 head and cams. Muffler is stock 2in1 and I'm going to use kn pods without the airbox.
Sudco recommends pilots 25 and mains 120 for kz650 through 1000.
The setup I received from the PO of the vm29 A7 (1.5mm slide cut) is
Pilot 17.5
Air jet 0.9
Needle 5dl31 (Clip in middle position)
Needle jet 0-6
Needle valve 2.5
Main jet is a keihin 98 which is a mikuni 90 (strange, I know)

I read two different opinions from members here. Zukdave says to not go smaller on the pilot jet as there is a weak idle signal and therfor a larger jet size is needed. I think he uses 22.5 pilot and 122.5 main. On the other side Wiredgeorges' experience is that 25 pilots are way too large and 17.5 is the way to go. Also the main jet should be reduced.

So what is the way to go now?
I thought to to go for this setup now as richer is safer than leaner:
Pilot 22.5
Air jet 1.0
Needle 5dl31 (Clip in middle position)
Needle jet 0-6
Needle valve 2.5
Main jet 122.5

Whats the oppinion of you experienced vm29 users to this setup?
Thanks!

Was hoping to see more chime in but not many have these carbs (some old timers). Do a search I've found many that way..... most are using 17.5 pilots and 117.5 mains. Since mine is quite a bit smaller I went with the 17.5 pilots and 115 mains. Some say 1/4 turn (George). 1/2 turn (a few others). 1 and 1/2 turns out (Patton) on the air screw and I've found any less than or more than 3/4 (Zucks give or take a little) makes it run pretty rough off idle. Mid range and top feels much stronger (over the stock 24s) but would like to see a air/fuel chart someday to see if 117.5 would do a little more.

Zuck has had his bike for quite a while (and doing good at the strip) and I'm a thinkin his set up has got to be pretty close for the 810. Mine seems plenty rich at idle and has great response off idle but its not perfect. It starts instantly with little choke and can turn it off very soon (but we'll se when it cools off) and has almost zero hesitation taking off (better than it was when I first got them many years ago and had them on my stock motor). I think new carb holders helped that mostly........ Let us know what you find out that runs best for you and good luck.

Edit ...... Just saw you had 2.5 needle valves and I think you mean 1.5s (no biggy) and I'm not sure if Dave changed to a 1.0 air jets either but was just thinking about it....... have not read any others doing that but who knows.

I just wonder about the huge discrepancy between what zuk says with 25 or 22.5 jet and what wiredgeorge says about 17.5 pilot jet.. maybe i should go with the 17.5 then as more people seem to go for this size. Still unsure about main jet. Wanted to go 122.5 but this seems kind of a little too large with 17.5 pilot.
I was refering to the needle valve with sudco part number n122.032-2.5 with 2.5mm.
I think it was also zukdave who wrote something about the larger air jet with 1.0 mm. But I'm not sure about that..

Maybe read Zucs drag strip trip for some more ideas and a blast to read if you like fast 650/750s. Some of the others are on there and might be able to be asked. He has a lot of time on getting these to run right so I was kinda torn between the pilots myself. It was he like you said that was thinking of the 1.0 air jet but he told me he in the end left it alone and since its used in all from 550 to 1100 motors I left it too (.9).

He was right on the 3/4 air screw setting for mine and since he's running a 12.2 time with no slick and bar... less of a cam and comp too he must have the mains damn close too. You pipes might make a slight difference though..... back to 120s on the mains ??? Almost went 20s on the pilot but like I said since I'm smaller with less cam and smaller heads........guess trial and error might be your best bet.

Probably you are right and I have to go for trial and error.. just wanted to try not buying useless jets in the end.
So the setup I'll go for now is:
Pilot 17.5
Main 120
Air jet 0.9
Needle 5DL31 with clip in middle
Needle jet 0-6
Needle valve 2.5
so I just have to buy the main jets in the beginning. Maybe I'm lucky and it will work. Hopefully....
Thanks!

I'll never run a set of VM29 sb's on a small motor again. Maybe it's just the set I have but I've never been able to
get them to idle right.

My current setup is
125 mains
22.5 pilot
5DL31 in the fourth notch
0.9 air jet

1980 KZ650 F1
ZX750A1 motor.
Wiseco 810cc kit.

VM 29 smooth bore's.
Dyna 2000 Ign. w/Dyna mini coil's
APE cylinder stud's and nut's.
APE valve spring's.
APE Track King clutch.
