Need help re-jetting carbs on 1983 KZ440 LTD
20 Apr 2017 19:22
Hello everyone,
I am new to riding as well as motorcycles all together. Recently I acquired a 1983 KZ440 ltd in a trade and it is idling too high. I knew this going into the trade and was told it was an easy fix.I have been told to re jet the carbs and it should take care of it. The kid I got it from comes from a mechanical background and seemed pretty sure. I would really like to start working with small engines and doing my own maintenance on the bike and this seemed like a good project for me and something to be proud to ride. I have tried looking around to no avail but I'm sure its been talked about before. Is it easy enough and worth it to do it myself. Any responses are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jimmy M.

Get yourself a manual and perform ALL the routine maintenance and go from there.
The carbs probably need to be cleaned. But go thru the brakes, ignition/electrical, engine and chassis.

Back in '83 my stepfather had one of these, and it was cold-blooded as heck - worse than my GPz550.
At the time, I looked at the jets for the Export only one, and changed the main jet / Pilot jet, and shimmed the meedle a very slight amount, and it made a world of difference.

My wife asked me if I still loved her - I said "Honey, I love you more than new carburetor boots ! "

Rejetting the carbs is not the solution for an engine idling too high. The person who told you that doesn't appear to be familiar with your motorcycle.
The answer is to simply turn the big idle adjustment screw counter-clockwise until the engine idles at the proper rpm. Be SURE you know what that rpm level is so you don't idle it down too low, otherwise you may lower the oil pressure too much and create a problem. Ed
