'81 KZ 1000 LTD Carb Boot and Air Filter Swap
11 Jan 2017 13:50
Hello All!
Over the winter, I have been working on rebuilding an 81 KZ 1000 K1 LTD that I picked up cheap with 20,000 miles on it. The bike currently suffers from an idle that races up to 4000 rpm after starting up until the bike is warm, and old, dirty, pod air filters.
I believe the carb boots are cracked and creating a vacuum leak, which would cause the racing idle (I purchased the stock, OEM replacement boots). Regardless, the boots should probably be replaced since I'm assuming they are the original boots and thus 35 years old. In addition, I figured it would probably a good idea to replace the existing air filters since they are obviously dirty and not a large expense.
The bike actually runs decent with the existing setup, however it would probably run much better if I swapped these parts out.
The questions I have are:
If I run these air filters ( www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SQNJXME/ref...02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ), would I need to change anything in the carb?
When swapping out the carb boots, should I seal them with some high temp RTV? Or are they good to go on dry?
Any input would be appreciated!

Are the filters you have washable. If not, your best bet are name brand filters like K&N, APE, et cetera.if the carbs have been rejetted to work with the pods you have, they should be ok.
Carb holders should go on dry.
Carb holders should go on dry.

A number of folks have reported problems with Emgo filters, so you probably should avoid them.

Real deal K&N's are washable. You can purchase a cleaning and oiling kit for a reasonable price. Generic pods, like those from Amazon, are junk.
