Carb rebuild
02 Jan 2017 15:53
Finally got the carb off, got some questions. First off anyone know where I could get a rebuild kit for a 81 z650. Second the mixture screw is where? I seen photos of it but for mine there isn't. Sorry to sound stupid this is my first bike. Thirdly if I wanted to change from airbox to pond or such what jets sizes would I need? Has anyone done this for a similar bike?

Cycleorings.com sells an O-ring kit for VM carbs.

Hi Steven,
I have the exact same bike and just happen to have my carbs apart right now. In the photo below, the pen is pointing to the hole where the air mixture screw should be (mine is soaking in carb cleaner at the moment).
I can't help you with pods. I'm keeping it simple.

Drill a small hole very carefully & shallow, then pry out the plugs.
If you drill too far, you could damage the air screws. that would be a boo boo.

Hey Steven,
Here are some resources for you.
I recently came across this guide for rebuilding VM carbs. It has some really helpful tips and photos: VM Carb Rebuild by Paul Musser
NOTE: There are some differences between our carbs and the model shown in the guide. For instance, we don't have a pilot fuel screw. You can use the Partzilla diagram to verify the specific components in your carbs: Partzilla - Carburetor parts
The o-ring set that Ness mentioned above is here (I just ordered one for myself): cycleorings.com/VMkit.html
Ness and others have also advised me to avoid carb "rebuild kits" because they consist of poor quality components. You should definitely get that set of o-rings and then order any jets or gaskets you may need. That way, you'll know exactly what you're getting.
