Stock airbox with BS34 on a '78 model

I'm thinking about keeping the stock air box on my '78 KZ1000 in order to keep tuning issues to a minimum. I was wondering if I could just replace the airbox hoses to ones from a later model. I was thinking these might work-

I was also looking for a recommendation on an air filter element. K&N, UNI or other free flow filter ?

Thanks in advance and wishing everyone a wonderful holiday!

If not, NOS ducts can be found on eBay and maybe elsewhere, but they are not inexpensive. Ed

Do you have the carbs mounted up to the head already? If not, I think you will need the CV type carb boots, which are larger than the early type boots for VM carbs. Those ducts from Z1 should work. You may have to open up the holes in the airbox but I'm just guessing on that part. You may want to order new clamps too.

Thanks guys! I'm in the process of doing a top end job, so the engine is apart right now. I have new intake boots for the larger carbs and most of the other stuff. I'm just trying to get the air box thing figured out. I'll go ahead and order the ducts. I just had major surgery with a 3 month recovery time, so it will be awhile before I get the engine back together. In the mean time, I'm going to spend a lot of time here learning about KZ's.

also not sure if you have this covered yet but I'm pretty sure you need a vacuum type petcock to use the BS34 CV carbs.

I'm using a Pingel with a single outlet. It's a beautiful piece and provides much better flow compared to the stocker. I just have to make sure to turn it to the off position after riding.

Better make sure it's got clearance to the carbs. Those BS Mikuni's have a larger footprint than the VM's.

And no, you don't need a vacuum petcock to use CV carbs.

In this topic over at the KZ650.Info site the airbox on a 70s 650 was modified to fit the carburetors & ducts
from a late model ZR750. I'm guessing you might have to do something similar on the 1000. just a guess.
The topic w good photos is in the Carb Stickies section ---- Sayonara Mikunis by Z650Spirit.
He's got one of the nicest 650s around. you have to register & sign-in to use the site.
