Carb size...model?
11 Dec 2016 16:35
Have a set of 'AP' Mikuni's, supposedly 28's from a '79 MKII. However the parts diagram(s) shows the MKII's 28mm AP set has the airscrew above the bowl, and the 26mm AP set of the '79 LTD 1000's have the air screw below (as apparent in the pics).
And the digital measurement doesn't seem to add up to them being 28's (as my caliper shows).
I've heard bad reviews over the years about the '79 LTD 1000 carb setups being so hard to tune...(Wired George being one example). Nonetheless makes no matter, all in what you're used to but I want the 28's that I ordered. These obviously aren't the 28's from the MKII. These are 26's?
Thanks for any input.

P.S. I've had a good many sets of Mikuni's apart over the years and this the 1st time I've seen what appear to be 'plastic' main jets?
Hmmm.

I suspect those carbs may have been changed sometime, there are quite a few that fit each model.
Plastic jet, that is a new on on me...was it some aftermarket tuning kit jet?
I'd dump the clear PVC hose and use some fuel rated, it goes brittle and discolorours quite quickly in my experience, even when used for vacuum links.

11 Dec 2016 17:27The origins of the jets I have no clue as they are as I got them. I'm updating the set with new parts etc. I know any one of a whole array of carb sets can fit many KZ900/1000 models. I was just expecting a specific set and apparently received another. The size is what concerns me.Tyrell Corp wrote: I suspect those carbs may have been changed sometime, there are quite a few that fit each model.

This happens all the time on ebay, breakers get them and can't accurately identify them.
See my GPz550 H jet thread reply regarding slightly illogical kawasaki carb sizing measurement - on the later 550 Cv's for certain.

I recently was surprised by plastic main jets in the carbs of my gsxr slabbie project. I had never seen or heard of such a thing either. After some internet searching and talking to some old timers I found that yes they are aftermarket, they are surprisingly good quality and are fine to use and hold up ok, beware of the labeled size as they are easy to drill.
Looks like you got shafted on ebay because, yes, there are both vm26ss and vm28ss out there.

Wasn't ebay and the price was minimal. Simple parts trade deal actually. It wasn't even intentional as far as I know. Just wanted a bit of input on the actual carb size, as I don't have a need for 26's. I can likely use them somewhere down the road, and/or keep for trade value. They will have new kits in 'em. Thx for the input.

I traded some jets at a local Kawasaki dealer years back and had to take a plastic one as he only had 3 brass (forget the size)....... I ended up not trusting it and bought a new brass one at Z1 without ever using it.

Well anyway new kits will be here soon and all new gaskets, seals and jets will be installed (pump kits included) and I'll either sell them or keep for trade value for something I cld use. Perfect case scenario would be to find someone with the carbs I want (and could use these) and make a swap.

Re: Carb size...model?

Found another interesting bit of info (posted back in 2005) that explains the differences between the 26's (pumpers) of the '79-'80 LTD's and the 28's of the MKII's of the same years.
kzrider.com/archive/viewthread.php?tid=29912
My question is, can anyone positively ID these carbs as being the actual 26's of the '79-'80 LTD's, by the pics I posted above, and comment on their characteristics? Thanks again for any input.
