Air filter
10 Aug 2016 16:15
Would anyone happen to have a part number for a replacement air filter, preferably a Fram?
Also, if I go to a K&N air filter, will I have to re-jet

Kawasaki.com and partzilla should have the number you need.

I HIGHLY recommend you simply buy a stock Kawasaki air filter. They filter finer particles than K&N and do not require oiling or jetting changes - perfect fit; no muss/no fuss. The part number for the 1978 KZ650-C2 air filter is 11013-1006 (see link below). It should still be available from any local or online Kawasaki parts dealer. Partzilla has them at:

I would buy the K & N filter
I have used one for 36 years and 68,000 some miles
The finer Particle thing is way overblown, buying filters constantly is way overrated
I always go with the brands that people make there living with use(not just spokesmen) it's their livelihood and they wouldn't use junk  and they try to be economical as possible
EZ

EZ
I've used K&N filters on my cars and my FZ6, and agree it's better than paying for new paper all the time. My question is though, will I have to re-jet my carbs if I do?
Does anyone know anything about the brand Hiflo? They have an OEM replacement for $10 on amazon

Hiflow filters are good quality. No worry there.
K&N's let more dirt thorough, and dirt causes wear. What's the point in that? If your carbs are on the lean side of normal, which is common with bikes from the KZ era, the K&N may cause the warm up time to be longer and for the bike to run slightly lean. Probably no big deal but again, what's the point? Just so you can get a filter that can be cleaned again? You can purchase 5 HiFlo filters for the cost of a K&N w/cleaner kit.

My logic may be wrong, but here it is anyway.....
If you live in a area with paved roads and relatively low levels of dirt in the air (such as where I live) the stock air filter will easily go 10,000 miles or more before needing to be changed. If you live in an area with lots of dirt roads and high levels of dirt in the air you may need to clean or replace the stock filter more often OR you can buy a K&N filter that can be cleaned, re-oiled, etc. (assuming you have the discipline to do that maintenance). However, in that case where there's lots of dirt roads and dirt in the air is it wise to use a K&N which doesn't filter out particles as well as the stock filter? To me, the stock filter wins hands down in either case since it costs less than 1/2 the price of a K&N and does a better job of preventing fine grit from entering the cylinders. I'm sure others will disagree with my logic. BTW, I have no axe to grind against K&N; I've been using K&N oil filters in my KZ650 for decades. Ed

I stated my case and stand by it. And no you should not have to rejet your carbs
The "dirt" that got thru in 68 some thousand miles must not be big enough to bother anything
People refer to the 70 KZ's as lean running bikes, but in my experience from 650's 75 thru 80 always ran rich
More air coming in evens this out and that's the point  Maybe altitude is more of a factor than is usually discussed ???
I clean my filter every 5,000 miles...... Buying junk pleated paper at any cost is a losing proposition IMHO
Like they say, different strokes for different folks  68 some thousand miles and still lighting up that back tire :woohoo:
EZ
