cleaned carbs
18 Jul 2016 19:04
Hello everyone I just cleaned my carbs on my 82 kz1100 a2 and when I started it up white smoke came out of exhaust I have read that a head gasket leaking in combustion chamber could do this but wouldn't you see an oil leak somewhere? I've also heard that too much oil in my engine also could cause it I need help lighting it out also my engine stutters and bogs down when throttling what could cause that

How did you check the oil level? Ed

You are probably already doing this, but when you check the oil be sure the bike is on the center stand on level ground. I have read of some folks checking the oil level with the bike on the side stand in which case they over-filled it. Ed

When i checked the oil last i made sure it was up straight so i could see the oil in the glass, also would too much oil make the bike bog down when accelerating

It could load up the air filter.

Were those filters on before you cleaned the carbs?
If you were running the stock air box before and stock those individual pod filters on after the cleaning, you have just identified where the bogging is coming from. You will need to either reconnect the stock setup or spend some time rejetting the carbs.
The white smoke could be from residual carb cleaner left in the carbs or from over oiled filters.

That rule of thumb of white smoke being a head gasket only applies to a liquid cooled engine - in that case the white smoke is actually steam and coolant burning off in the combustion chamber....
Is the smoke white or grey?
Light grey might be deposits in the exhaust or combustion chamber burning off, or a small amount of engine oil being burned off. Does it smell like burning oil?
Rich fuel / air mixture is usually identified by black smoke, most notable when the engine is given a healthy handful of throttle. Oil burning usually is most visible when the throttle is shut off completely after hard acceleration at high RPM - a puff of blue / grey smoke out the exhaust. Someone following behind and watching the exhaust can be a big help...
