Secondary main jet.

I have a 84 kz700. I was cleaning the carbs out and didn't count how many turns it took for the secondary main jet it took. I tried taking a guess but the bike won't start without some cleaner. Now once it starts gets a high rev and once the cleaner burns out it shuts off. Bowels are full of fuel. idk seems like I may have tightened something too much or something. Sorry for the noob question but this is my first bike. Trying to get it running on my own to learn a little about it. thanks in advance.

Are those Mikuni carbs or Keihin? Only the Keihin's have a secondary main jet, but I thought the KZ700 had Mikuni carbs? In either case the jets are not adjustable. You tighten them up until they are seated and snug. The pilot screws were adjustable though, and a good starting point is about 2.5 turns open.

Yes they are mikuni. Got it though. Thanks for your help.

If the pilot screw isn't right will it stop the bike from starting since the mixture is not right?

I'm not sure if a misadjusted pilot screw would keep the bike from starting. I doubt it would if you are running the bike on choke. Just set the screws to 2.5 turns open and you won't have that issue regardless.

That said, it sounds like you need to do some maintenance. I'd pull the carbs and go through them properly to eliminate all concern.

If not already done , would assure that the pilot jet is receiving fuel (through the small passageway where so designed) and that the fuel mixture is passing through both small orifices where it's supposed to enter into the carb bore.

Good Fortune! :)

I've done basic maintenance on it. Cleaned the carbs out. New plugs and oil.
