Is this a carb issue?? was created by tri650
I just got my 1982 Gpz 750 back together after 6 years and tried to start. Carbs were rebuilt. It would turnover but no go. I kept waiting and hitting the starter and nothing. Then I pulled the plug to check spark and it started - on basically 3 cylinders. I stopped it, put the plug back in and started again. It fired up on full choke and revved very high so I shut down the choke - then it stumbled and died. I have tried for the last 6 hours to start and nothing. Won't even act like it wants to start.

Not sure how to proceed. Too much gas and flooding? Not enough gas? I dread taking the carbs off as they were a total pain to put in. It was obviously getting gas and spark to start. Thinking of dropping the float bowls and making sure it is getting gas.

A lot of times it's something stupid like the ignition wires being switched. I've done it.

I checked this numerous times - because I am easily confused. 1-4 together and 2-3 together. I even marked the coils with gold marker when I took it apart. Not sure how to triple check to make sure I have it right.

The thing that gets me is that it started once and sounded strong. If I had the coils wrong I am guessing it wouldn't have even gotten that far. That is why I think it is carb related.

Check that the advancer is not on 180 degrees off. Won't run like that. R

first. if those plugs are not new .. go a head and put some new ones in . they could be fouled .
if it fired with the choke up and then died .. you may not be getting fuel . are the plugs wet?
will it fire if you spray a little carb cleaner through the air box?

When I got home tonight I tried to start the bike - it fired up but idle was erratic and would rev up and stay revved up if I gave it throttle or when I turned the bars. Finally figured out I routed the throttle cable wrong and it must have been pinching the cable. I routed correctly and it fired up without the high revs. Turning bars did not cause a jump in revs. I set idle with the adjustment knob and it would start. Took for about a 10 mile ride and it ran very smoothly and tons of power - even nice roll on. When I stopped it kept a nice idle around 1200.

Not sure what the pinched throttle cable did to stop it from starting other than maybe flooding the carbs.

Thanks to all for input and support. Much appreciated!
