Air box kz650
19 Jan 2016 07:29
I am looking for a stock air box for my 1979 kz650 SR and as I search I am also wondering if I could get one from a different bike. Such as a 700 or 750 maybe. Also are they different from separate 650 models?

You'll probably need to get an airbox from a 77-80 650.
The 750-4 airbox is different --- each of the 4 duct holes are the same diameter (~56.5 mm).
On the 650 the outer 1-4 duct holes are larger in diameter than the inner 2-3 holes (47mm vs 40mm. pretty sure).
I don't know if the 77-80 airboxes are all the same or interchangeable. they probably are, but that's just a guess.
The 81-83 650-CSR airbox is the same as the 750E/H models.
There is some variance in the shape of the 750 airboxes & the duct hole offset may be different from the earlier 650s.

The guy I'm talking to (revboyz) has a 1984 700 he has the air box and a Vance and Hines he says they should fit, but I'm not sure.

20 Jan 2016 02:11 - 21 Jan 2016 01:52The 700 airbox is the same as the 750-4. if you don't have the correct ducts, none of them will work with VM24 carburetors. The guy I'm talking to (revboyz) has a 1984 700 he has the air box and a Vance and Hines he says they should fit, but I'm not sure.
BS32 carburetors from an 82-83 650-CSR could be installed, but you'd need the 750 carb holders & airbox ducts. I don't know if there would be fitment issues with the airbox.

You might be able to install a 750 airbox & ducts, then cut donuts from radiator hose to make up the difference in diameter, fitting the donuts onto the vm24s. you'd have to use 2 donuts per carb & ss band clamps. Assuming a 750 airbox fits your 650 frame, this could be an option.
