28 pumper carb questions was created by strum
I just picked up a set of these from ebay (not delivered yet) and I have a set on my bike now.
Im still waiting on my tank grrr.
While i understand these were designed to fix the lean condition created from the smog stuff.
Since i have removed that why not disable the accelerator pump too?
If so whats the best way?. Unhook it ? pull the squirt tubes? plug the holes?
I have found mixed advise on the pumpers ..some love em some hate em.
what say you guys?

You can run them as is, they are fine. Or disconnect the pump arm, or go all out, swap the bowls to non pumpers, pull the nozzles and plug with solder.

The 'emission' comment is meant towards the use of an exhaust gas 'sniffer' detecting a richer than required idle, the pumps are there so the idle can be leaner than usual and so the bike doesn't have an off idle flat-spot. Nothing to do with the fresh air system

If all is working fine (airbox, snorkel, fresh air etc) I'd leave well enough alone and enjoy it

I really didn't get the answer I was looking for.
how well do the pumper work if the pump is disabled?
and what are the proper steps to do it?

I have 28mm carbs with the pumper disabled. IMO, the pumper was used so overall they could use weaker jetting for passing emission requirements and not have the engine falter under acceleration. My pump needed rebuilding, but I read they can give issues when the bike is not used regularly with drying out and then taking ages to get going again, if indeed they did. I felt in part to fit some other float bowls I had and just do away with the extra parts to clean things up and get more consistency in running, given my bike is far from an everyday ride. If you jet accordingly and along the lines of the bikes before they used the pumper carbs, then I don't see a need to use that setup, although there may be some slight benefit in initial acceleration on paper, I doubt you would notice it. Given that it's good to run toward a rich mixture on an air cooled engine to keep temps down, it's probably wise to be running jet sizes that would be consistent with not needing an accelerator pump anyway.

So to answer your question, the 28mm carbs will run fine with out the accelerator pump, there were bikes that came from the factory with such a setup. To remove it just disconnect the linkage. To avoid a leaking diaphragm or similar and to remove some clutter swap the float bowls for the ordinary type. You will likely have to remove the nozzles, or the bowls will not seal properly as the nozzles protrude a little and the stock bowls have no recess for it to go into.

My kz 650 ran great with the pumper disabled, went up one pilot size to 17.5.Never missed a beat. That was a quick fix at the time, but lasted about 10 years,Used the regular bowls, filled the needle holes and the pump rod was removed. Carbs still ran good till An exhaust valve dropped onto #4 piston.I now have a new engine, and have learned much more. Pumpers are back in place and she runs great, I now build carbs to support my projects.I have some 28 pumper that are pristine for sale.
