Hello guys . I recently purchased a 1980 shaft . Its got the 28mm pumpers on it.
Back in the 80s I worked at a dealership and had one of these and many others 650,s 900,s aven a 440 lol..
Any way I didnt keep up (kids Jobs ect) and now Im enjoying the ST very much.. There is something special about riding these old beasts.
All we had in the day was stock carbs or 29 smoothbores . now im seeing the CV type carbs and if im corect they are a much better carb to use.
If so ..what do yall suggest i run ?. Its all stock except the exahust is a header with the stock air box.
Its running good but i never liked those pumpers much and Ive heard the CVs run very smooth ..Thoughts?

My first thought is "If it's not broken, don't fix it until it is".
The real question is "do you have stock air box and OEM filter? If yes then it would be an easy swap to CV carbs. If PODS do yourself a favor and leave those pumpers on there.

Don't fix it until it's broken.

I think that on a nearly stock bike, the difference between properly tuned 28 pumpers and properly tuned cv carbs will be too insignificant to justify the trouble and expense. I'd vote for insuring that the 28s are properly jetted for your pipe, make sure that all valve clearances are within spec, carefully adjust the carbs, and ride.

Thanks guys ..the " if it aint broke dont fix it " answer is about right for me.. I am running the stock airbox and an OEM type filter
the only thing missing is the snorkel.. not sure why it was removed . I have played around with the jetting some - was running 17.5 pilots and 115 mains.. it was very cold natured and i felt a little lean so i took them to a guy who helped me out..
the check valves in the bowls were missing the little clips and o rings .. luckly he had some ..try finding those clips.
he said the pump was weak because of it. and we put in some 117 mains. I have em on the bike now but i cant run it yet because the tank is being painted. hopefully ill get it back this week . getting anxious lol

Being anxious is a good thing... Be careful not to scratch the newly painted tank on installation. That would suck.... I know... Don't ask.

He he .. it was scratched up from what looked like tank removal.. like the metal tank hold down tab on the seat contacted it.. then dummy me dented it when loading it on the truck.. stupid mistake but i had planed on repainting it anyway. just not dent fixing lol..
