For some it is the look.
For some it is the sound.
For some it is the weight.
For some it is the performance.
For some it is the easiest solution to missing or badly damaged stock parts.
For some it is just to be cool.

There's always trade-offs and as usual, Ed nails it

On mine, the stock exhaust was huge, heavy and worst of all.... blocked the bolts to the shock absorbers.

That said, I wish I still had a good set of stock pipes.

The 4-1 is a "cheap" solution to missing or ugly stock pipes, or a way to preserve the stock pipes for another day. If the pipe is half decent then I think any loss of performance at one speed along with any gain at another will not be very noticeable if at all.

Removing airboxes is a bad idea IMO for almost everyone. I think the price stock airboxes sell for on eBay is a great example of how many people have reached that conclusion for themselves. Airboxes can be restrictive, but even they can often be modified for improved performance if that is your all out goal. It always seems to me that carbs need some "restriction" to operate properly across the whole rev range that is used for road riding. On the race track velocity stacks and no filtration are the norm, but the rpm and use of the engine is worlds apart from what we're talking about here. Unless someone has good carburetor, tuning skills and knowledge and the time to put in it makes no sense to do away with a perfectly good airbox set up.

For me, it's just to piss off people who say not to do it.
Just kidding. :)

You can get it to run fine, but as mentioned, all other hobbies will be on hold for a summer.

Make it run right with the airbox and save yourself the grief. On a stock motor, other than more intake noise, you're not gaining enough to justify the effort and costs involved.

i like the stock air box on mine i just put a k&n filter in it ,it runs like a train ,and the stock pipes look cool also ,
but they are in great condition with only 4,800 miles on the clock B) ,its a lot less hassle with the stock stuff

Cant believe nobody posted a link to 650eds post on this subect. It should be required viewing when considering pods.

P.S. Im still undecided on the subject, though I see the wisdom in getting everything running properly in standard trim before messing around with anything.

Not worth the hassle(hoff). When I got mine, it came with pods and no matter what I tried, I just couldn't get her running right. Put a stock airbox in and barely touched the starter button and she fired up!

I've decided to keep mine in light of all the comments. Lol. My first bike was a inline 4 but I never really had to touch it mechanically, my second was a 78 goldwing and the air box was modified when I got it. Since then I've only had v twins and ran open filter set ups on them with without having to modify anything with the fuel systems
