Bought bike with pod air filter...
27 Dec 2015 08:48
Last month I bought my first bike, it was a kz750-m1 twin. For the first couple weeks I could tell something was up with it when you cant get the rpm's over 4500 and the bike past 60mph. So I called a local mechanic and told me I would have to get my carbs rejetted, I asked for a price and it was too dang much. So I did some poking around online and found out that the carbs were a 115 (whatever that means) so they said the bike was running lean and to move up to 125, which I did.
Now that I moved the carb size (Main Jet) to that 125 the bike now has significant more power and I can shift to second gear at a higher mph; however, it did not do too much when it came to the rpm's or the actual maximum speed. With the new sized main jet head the bike's max rpm is now 5200~ but max speed is about 62 now.
My question is what do I do now? Do I keep moving up in sizes until I find a right fit for the pods or what else? I'm open to suggestions and thank you gents for all the help!

A 750 twin will go 100mph +. The lack of rpms means carb clog or stuck timing advancer. R

There are a guzillion discussion threads about tuning cv carbs with pod filters. I am sure there are some specifically for 750 twins. Give the search box a try. However, you need to perform all the necessary maintenance first. Trying to use carb tuning to make up for improper valve lash, a stuck timing advancer, a poorly performing ignition system and such will only lead to frustration and unnecessary expense.
Get a genuine Kawasaki Factory Service Manual and carefully perform all the routine maintenance. Only then can you be sure that the carbs are properly jetted and adjusted.

Scary indeed. Running the bike with the carb mixture all jacked up causes the engine to run HOT. You can damage pistons, rings, valves ect attempting to run the bike this way.
Order a Dynojet kit for your bike before you cook the poor engine. If the pods you have are the junky Emgo type changing them out for some decent pods from K&N, APE, or Mikes XS is strongly advised too. Or, get a stock airbox and throw that on...

I just completely cleaned and thoroughly scrubbed the carbs, after doing more research it does actually seem like that is the issue with the bike now. If the device is stuck can one simply clean relube and reinstall the device or would I have to purchase another ignition advancer?
Thanks all!

The manual will cover that. there are paper ones for sale on ebay and electronic ones available on the web if you look around.
Here is a very good resource for Twin owners: kz750twins.com/

If you are asking about the timing advancer, usually a good cleaning and proper lubrication are all that is needed.

Well trying to get the advancer off I look at the screws and apparently the guy before me completely stripped the screws. Now I need a way to get this dang thing off... Also my headlight lost all the screws so I have to buy more screws online because home depot didn't have any.

That's why a genuine JIS screwdriver, or a suitably modified Philips screwdriver, is important. Can you grip the heads with vice grips?

Relax and practice patience. Get some Kroil or other penetrating fluid and spray the bolts first. Wait a day. Go back and pinch on a vise grip or channel lock and they will come out. Replace em with allen head M4 or M6 bolts whatever they are. If they still won't budge, carefully grind the head not totally off though, just enough to slip thru the plate. You will then have about and 1/8" of bolt to grab with the plate out of the ay. Be patient, put the drill away. Been there, done that, still regret it

If you have an ACE hardware by you that is a good source for screws. Or Fastenal would be better yet. I like using stainless steel when I can.

I finally got that pesky ignition advanced off cleaned it and lubed it back up. Still the rpms are maxed around 5000 and speed is limited to 60 still. What else could be the culprit? I already rejetted.
