Are you certain your ignition timing is set correctly? It may not be the carbs.

Ignition timing is not adjustable on these bikes.

Yeah, seems to be working right. All lubed up. No problems at 4K RPM... No pinging when lugging the engine on the highway.

Had same issues with my bike. I messed with mixture screws until I could not see straight. I must have taken the carbs off and reinstalled 10 times. I was able to get the bike to idle better but It would not run 100% until I hit 3k rpm. I finally dove deeper into the carbs and found that the pilot jets were all gummed up and, that was after major cleaning of carbs. Passages on pilot jets are tiny. I went ahead and bought a new set, installed and FINALLY got it right!!!

I have discovered that if your bike sits un-ridden too long, you risk the chance of clogging the pilot jets. Good luck.

I am very new to this but one passage/opening I found clogged on my carbs was the pilot bypass orifices near the throttle blade. Idle was fine and mid/top range was fine, the off idle fueling was f'd up, and it turned out that these tiny little orifices were clogged.

they're shown here as transfer ports

That's possible. I know the pilot jets themselves are clean because I've had them out many times. I've blasted that entire circuit with carb cleaner many times and seen it exit via those holes. How did you know yours were clogged and how did you unclog them?

Yeah, that's where I am right now. This bike did sit for 2 years before I got it. The carbs weren't nearly as gummed up as I expected (PO had dumped a lot of sta-bil in the tank and idled the motor every month), but there was some crud in there, especially under the pilot jets. However, I've cleaned them so many times now... I started this thread in the hopes that someone would chime in telling me there's some super-secret hidden accelerator pump or something on the BS34's that I need to clean too. The fact that it's such a subtle thing doesn't help either...

You might try draining the bowls and reinstalling the bowl screws then filling the carbs with Gumout liquid or some equally strong carb cleaner and let sit for a week. If internals have oxidized gas gumming them up, that should clear it.

When no amount of jetting cures a problem it's a good indication the fuel level is not correct.
