So, after riding around with the freshly rebuilt VM22SS carbs for a while on my 78 Kawasaki KZ650, and finally getting all of the vacuum leaks taken care of (new intake boots), it is MUCH quicker than before.. I think I know why too... Originally, it had the 24mm carbs on it, with 110 jets, and the stock air box + exhaust (stock vm24 jets were 102.5's) and few vacuum leaks and leaky carbs, so suffice to say, the fuel delivery system was not in good shape, and not making the power it should be... But, with the smaller 22mm carbs, and open pod air filters, along with 110 main jets (stock was 90), increased the air flow dramatically, by reducing the size of the carb, thus increasing air speed velocity, and then the pods increase the amount of air that is being taken in, by a large amount.. Combine that, with a ton of fuel from the big 110 jet (which is a lot of extra fuel compared to the stock 90 jets) and some solid spark from the Dynatek electronic iginition system, and it is noticably quicker, especially in the top end rang, it is very aggressive... Does anyone think that my logic makes sense, or is my seat-o-pants meter just fooling me? I mean, now I can get to 60 before I can even think about it, before, I had to think about it lol

Thinking its more of you getting things right ..... no air or fuel leaks and getting the jetting very close ...... love to hear it when folks get pods working correctly..... good job on that ...... not alot of power to be gained but every little bit helps........ big fan of the Dyna coils and ign too. ;)

On a given engine smaller carbs are usually easier to set up and more forgiving. I don't believe all things being equal, that 22's will give better performance than 24's but if the carbs are not setup correctly and you have air leaks etc. then you will lose serious HP. I have 24's on my KZ650B1 and that thing really picks it's feet up, even at 5,000 ft of altitude. It gets pretty light on the front end under full acceleration. Personally I think too much emphasis is put on running big carbs and the power benefits thereof. Big carbs with big jets may give some benefit on the top end, but this is usually at the expense of a good idle and good manners during normal use. I know some people are drag racing etc. that's different,, but if I want to ride fast I'll get my BMW out, there are limits as to how hard I want to push an almost 40 year old bike on a regular basis.
