That's a pretty good idea with the stockings. I'll try all of the things mentioned above tomorrow and I'll keep you guys updated.

Have you tried Z1E for a K&L filter? They're $50 but are life time filters.

If the airbox is missing, finding a complete replacement is going to be difficult.
The airbox cap is even harder to find --- usually it's broken or missing.

Someone over at the kawasakimotorcycle.org site posted a how-to for making a 440 airbox from a RadioShack project box. There is a youtube video. Image text added by me. :)

Use ABS cement to weld the plastic together. regular pvc cement may not work.
ABS cement & adapter ring should be available at the hardware store or plumbing supply.
The air filter is probably 44 or 45mm. Or maybe 48mm. ???

PS: next time, instead of steel wool, use brillo pads. I have a photo somewhere.

The auto parts store might have sheet foam you can use to make your own.
I think you'd need to oil it with a motorcycle air filter oil.

When installing the airbox, treat the cap with care as the thing apparently tends to break.
Also, make sure the cap is installed properly --- the check is to pull up on the back of it gently --- it shouldn't move (don't break it).

I ordered a sheet of element from eBay so let's see how this works out. And I'm not sure what you mean by pulling on the cap? I'll include a pic of my build so far just for giggles

Another quick update, so after taking it around the block yesterday a couple times it wouldn't start so I put it up for the night. Well so I just pulled out the right plug and it was super fouled to where it wasn't even getting spark after I cleaned it. So I started getting worried maybe it was something bigger but I threw in the old plug and that was sparking but I couldn't get it to run because I had to throw the battery on the charger

And I'm not sure what you mean by pulling on the cap?

To check that the airbox cap is properly secured, gently pull up on the back of the cap. I think it's supposed to fit into some grooves on the airbox --- fit the cap in place then attach the screws. If done wrong, you'll have a big vacuum leak.

I think you'd need to oil the air filter with a motorcycle air filter oil.
