Jetting: Lean in mid-range. Need advice.
19 Apr 2015 13:24
Hello again experts :woohoo:
I'm about to set out on the adventure that is jetting my carbs for the first time. The bike was running a bit on the lean side and I have since installed a new air filter (not pods), a fuel filter and two new exhausts that are a lot more open. The only trouble area I have spotted so far is it is somewhat unstable in the low-to-middle throttle range now. I think I understand how to fix the low (pilot) and top (mains) if needed but I'm not sure about the low to middle. The mains don't kick in until middle to WOT, right? So what do I do to make it more rich in around the 1/4-2/3's area?

Ah, I see. [strike]Where do I get those? Z1E is a bit too far from here.[/strike] Which sizes would be a good bet?

Thanks!
I have to admit I had no idea you could move the needle up and down that easy. Is it possible with clips on OEM needles too or do they only use washers?
Btw. my bike has CV34 carbs. Not sure if it is the same.

The mains do have a influence at 1/4 up. Just not a lot. More as the slides raise. That's how you can get yourself in a hole. I'd try one step larger mains, if that doesn't work, then adjust the needles. They're meant to be in the center position. If they are adjustable, they are for elevation changes and weather.

The dominant factor at 1/4 throttle open is needle position. Problem with:
These bikes have the needle tapers literally cut to match the flow of the stock air filter and pipes. With "really open" pipes, they always go lean and the only way to get richer is bigger mains and raising the needles. Most people just keep riching until the lean spots are killed but the engine probably will be rich at some RPM ranges.

CV carbs are more forgiving. VM carbs, you have to know more what you're doing. Throttle cut away, Nossles and needles, air bleeds, etc. can make all the difference.

I just had a look. No wonder I didn't get that the needle could be moved easily, since it couldn't. There's a clip all right, but the needle only has one notch. How do I know if they have more notches when ordering? The ones on now are stock I believe (I cannot remember the markings on them but it said the same as I saw on the Kawasaki parts locator. 4be something? Not on my PC so can't look it up right now but I guess that means it's the same as stock?)
