Carb Jet recommendations
10 Apr 2015 17:06
Hello KZ'ers
I am wanting to get some Jetting recommendations from you guys.
I have a 78 KZ1000 with VM28 carbs on it. The engine has been bored out to 1075 with MTC pistons. I also have a 4 into 1 V & H exhaust. I am going back to using the airbox,...which why I want to get some recommendations for jetting so I can avoid taking the airbox in and out trying different jets.
So,... I think the VM28's come stock with the 15 pilot and 105 mains,...but I a not sure?
with this in mind I am thinking of going one up one on the pilot to 17.5 and for the mains going 2 up for the V&H 4 into 1 exhaust and 2 more for the 1075 bore.
So ,...this would put me at 17.5 for the pilot and 115 for mains. What are your thoughts?
Thanks for you input,...hopefully it will help me from having to remove the air box too many times to dial it in.

I think 17.5 is a good start for pilots. I would go with 117.5 main jets or 120s. Sounds like your on the right path good luck. dave

You should not need to remove the carbs to change jets. Just drop the bowls with the carbs on the bike. Here are tools I use to drop the bowls. The mirror isn't absolutely necessary, but I find it helps a little. Ed

Z1 just added a set of allen heads for carb bowls too or maybe your local hardware store ....... I plan on a set next time I order...... nice though Ed I cut down a stubby but your set up looks much better.

Yes, I changed over to allen's also. The tools are a little different but it is still tight under the carbs to get the bowl's off and mains out. Although with how hard the air box is to remove and replace,...even with new boots,...I think changing the mains on the bike will save some time.
I was looking at the air box and there is a hole in the bottom which I think is not stock. Or is this a drain hole? Even though I have a hard time believing this makes a difference since there are two big air inlet holes from the top,...I have read that this also drives you to bigger mains.
So the goal is still to minimize changing the mains out,...thanks for your inputs. I think I'l go with 120's to start now. From what I recall,..being a little rich is better for the pistons
