Mikuni RS / Push Pull Carbs Adjustments
08 Oct 2014 02:44 - 08 Oct 2014 02:45
I finnally got my KZ1000J3 on the road and i'm trying to dial the carbs the best i can. Will get the bike on a dyno someday but there might be 5 good days of riding left in the danish season and i got some engine mods i wan't to do doing winter, so to spend a lot of money to get it jetted by some expert seems like a waiste if i'm going to change cams and pistons soon. The bike runs great above 3000RPM, the idle is uneven and rough and it does not pull very well under 3000RPM. I guess i have to balance the carbs with a vacum reader more precise than i did.
BUT, the most annoying thing is my cables.
I bought som new Motion Pro push/pull cables made for the Mikuni RS carbs but i'm having a lot of trouble getting them right. Right now i have a lot of slack in the pull direction but the push is tight because it can't keep it self closed. I have to close the throttle and hold it tight to get the slides to stay down. Is this normal with these carbs or is the return spring just to weak ? A friend of mine's J2 with RS carbs runs fine without the pull cable, guessing the spring is harder/new?
Any good tips on adjusting push/pull cables ?
And last, when balancing the carbs with a vacum reader should all the tops be off or just one at a time while adjusting ?

I just noticed i can adjust the tension of the return spring on the carbs. Will try that later. Guess that's solved!

Any tips on how to adjust the throttle return spring on those carbs? I cannot find an online resource (yet), for such an adjustment. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm glad that you were able to make some progress on your Mikuni RS carb adjustments. Safe Riding!

I made up my own cables to use with a Kawasaki push-pull right-hand control. Have them adjusted where there is no tension on the cables in either direction, and a few mm's of free play in the throttle grip before the slides are engaged.
For each spring the tension is increased by pulling the looped spring end over an adjacent attachment tab. Not sure if both springs are supposed to be adjusted equally, or just one. I use a loop of steel wire to pull the spring off one tab and move to another.
