Hey guys,I'm having a little issue that I could use some input on. After about two years, I finally got my kz project running. It's a 1982 kz750e.

RECENT WORK: includes new bearings in the bottom end, 100% new engine gasket kit. I had broke a ring reassembling the engine block and I put new rings on cylinder #4. Honed all the cylinders. All 3 Of the other pistons ring checked out to be within spec. New valves seals, cleaned and reseated all the valves. I had to replace chain guides and added a new chain tensioner.
The keihin carbs were cleaned and jetted with a dynojet kit:Needle is on #4 groove. 136 main.(to big?) #65 primary. The pilots are under those plugs I believe. Stock size I'm pretty sure #35. I am running pods and a V&H 4-1.

PROBLEM: the bike seems to be running a little rich and also seems to burn some oil upon start up. It has a slight rough idle at first. But After the bike warms up (3-4 min) it stops smoking . I turn the choke off and it idles great. Other then a slight hesitation between 2500-4000 rmp. The bike runs better than I ever expected (this has been a long project for me that I have never had the pleasure to ride until now). I'm more curious on why I'm getting blue smoke on start up? Any input will help guys thanks!

Eric.

With the new hone the rings will be reseating themselves. It may take a bit of running for that to happen. Just a thought. I'm sure other more experienced people will give you more feedback. I would check exhaust header temps as with pods and exhaust mods you might be running a little lean. Good luck.

1990 KZ1000P, 72k miles, 10 years in storage, new, bars, tires, chain and sprockets, seat, carbs cleaned, police equipement removed.

By checking the tempiture of the exhaust headers you can determine weather or not your running lean? My goal to to run it a good bit like you said, to see if the smokeing mellows out a bit over time before I really start thinking to deep into it. The engine is pretty much fresh off a rebuild. Thanks. Anyone else?

Bump. Today I'm going to check A/F. And possibly float height. Any other input on why it maybe smoking On start up other then the rings needing alittle time to seat?

I'd be more concerned about blue smoke when hot and fully run in. Put a few hundred miles on it, break it in and see if it improves.

Were they pattern or genuine valve guide oil seals?

blue smoke is oil, black smoke is rich.

They were not genuine oem valve seals. but like i said it only seems to smoke for the first 2-3 minutes on start up. i ran about 12 miles yesterday( bike is still not registered) and other than the little hesitation between 2500-3500 rpm it was smooth riding

this is my first non-water cooled bike, is there a good was to tell if the bike is running to hot? it was mid 90's yesterday here in socal. i noticed a little smoke coming from the the crank case breather where i have a small pod filter. at first i thought it was the new black engine paint, anything i should be worried about? i check the plugs and the look fine. i have a feeling you guys are right and just need to run her for a few hundred .

thanks a ton guys , its a great feeling to finally have a project i start a few years ago running and on the road! i will start a build thread as soon as i can!
