Will 1977 KZ400 carbs fit on a 1976?!? was created by magruder13
I've searched and searched and searched everywhere for this. The carbs on the 1976 KZ400 are Keihin CVB36 and the 1977 are Keihin CV32. I know the 36 vs 32 is an indication of size, but is that inlet size? If the inlet sizes are different, can't I just buy the 1977 carb boots to match? I read about the change in engines and the only difference is an external oil line running up that side of the engine, not sure if that would change much. Does anyone know if this will work or not?

Thanks!

Okay so I did some more research. The carb boots for the 77 model are listed as part numbers 781720 and 781729 while the 96 are listed as 781720. I read about size of carbs and I saw that the size is dependent not on the side of the mouth but the size of the venturi. Does any of this make sense? Am I reading complete bullshit?

I'm not sure but I can state what I know about the kz1000 as best as I can to help you. The Z1 had 28's they then went to the 26's and then back to 28 in 80. You could also bolt on a set of 29 smoothbores. All of those carbs would fit the same size boots just the dynamics of the carb itself were different. The 29's in comparison to the 26 was a night and day difference in many aspects. So three millimeters might wake that old girl up a bit. Try it. Of course if someone else chimes in here and says they do in fact work just remember you will have to sync and jet them properly to really work for your bike right.

If the engine hasn't changed in the two different years, why would a rejetting have to happen? The 77 carbs have the same type of jets as the 80's and some 90's bikes so I'm way less worried about finding different jet sizes, which makes me very happy. I did go ahead and buy them, but I got a pair in REALLY bad shape. I just bought an industrial 250W ultrasonic cleaner to help make this job of cleaning these parts way easier. Thanks for the reply!
