input anyone?
04 Aug 2014 15:21
Greetings everyone, hope ur all doing great, well, ive changed my thinking on improving my 78 LTD1000,,i was just going to rebuild my 26mm carbs and throw some k&n's on them with a kerker 4into1 with the 2.5" comp baffle or no baffle along with my dyna s ignition, coils and wires,,now ive decided to spend alot of money and buy a brand new set of keihin cr31's,,im hoping someone here has done what im planning and can tell me how close the carbs were right out of the box as far as jetting and adjustments,,how much increase in performance,im planning on ythe carbs from pj motorsports, they seem to have the best price, ive scoured the net for the best price,,will these carbs bolt right up to the stock manifolds(carb holders) i just spent 100 on new ones before changing my mind on the improvements,,id be curious to here about off the line and top end performance as well,,thanks VERY much,,oh,2" or 3" velocity stacks,,either one better looking etc?

Id say the cr 29s would be a better fit for ya.OMR is the in house cr carb guru to talk to about them.

Still recovering, some days are better than others.

Im not sure if my reply posted,,so ill try again,i was going to go with the cr29's but the tech at pj's told me the 29's were good for street use,,but the 31's would be better for street and highway,,i do want all around performance, off the line and like passing at 70mph on the interstate,,another person asked about my bike,as of now its a stock 78 kaw LTD1000,,but i have the dynatek dyna s ignition, coils and wires to be installed when i have carbs installed,im also going to get a kerker 4into1 header with either the 2.5 comp baffle or no baffle,,thanks for the replies

keihin cr31's on a stock motor?............why, put a set of VM28's on the bike.
Put the money into the head, port and maybe a valve upgrade.
Your going at it ass backwards.
SLOW DOWN, your going 100 mph.
Ask around and see what the deal is. The guys on here are well versed on any and all engine, carb upgrades. Do the work and get it right the first time.

Re: input anyone?
04 Aug 2014 16:19 - 04 Aug 2014 16:23Stick with the 29s,thats more than enough carb for a streetbike motor. If you could find a set of the 79-80 28mm pumper carbs those would work also,it all depends on how much work they need versus what the crs cost.Cal wrote: Im not sure if my reply posted,,so ill try again,i was going to go with the cr29's but the tech at pj's told me the 29's were good for street use,,but the 31's would be better for street and highway,,i do want all around performance, off the line and like passing at 70mph on the interstate,,another person asked about my bike,as of now its a stock 78 kaw LTD1000,,but i have the dynatek dyna s ignition, coils and wires to be installed when i have carbs installed,im also going to get a kerker 4into1 header with either the 2.5 comp baffle or no baffle,,thanks for the replies

Keep a baffle of some kind in there, running without one just kills low end torque and attracts unwanted attention from the law.

Hey Cal,
for the cost of the new CR carbs, I think you could do better with some head work and a set of fattened up VM28's.
The KZ head in stock form flows about 68-CFM on intake side. The CR carbs you want can supply far more fuel than the head can process, creating little performance for the money. This is why I question just slapping on a set of carbs.
A street port is about $350. They will grind out the intake runners increasing the intake CFM flow of the head. Along with the header, pods, Dyna ignition and VM28 carbs -- you will feel a good bump in performance. I would contact Larry and discuss what you want, get advice and a budget. He has the answers you need.
With a used pipe and watching the money, you might be able to do all the above for about the price of the CR CARBS, and be far happier in the long run. I haven't priced the carbs, but would guess $800
