Someone talk me out of this... KZ440B Airbox Mod was created by SvelteSoutherner
I have a perfect running 440B with stock carbs & air box. I despise the look of the stock airbox, just not enough to go through the hassle of pods. Staring longingly at my bike, as I am prone to do, I had a thought. Cut away the part of the air box surrounding the filter and keep the front part that attaches to the carbs. Visually that would do away with 2/3's of the airbox and expose the stock filter, which does not look all that bad. I would need to lightly epoxy the filter to the front wall of the air box.

The big question is: "Will this mess up my carburation and lead me down the long road of swapping jets?"

I would need to see some photos to make a suggestion, but cutting up a good airbox seems like a terrible idea. I'd sooner stick the air box on a shelf and try your luck with pods. At least then you can go back to stock. Have you Considered trying to add some bling to the stock box? Perhaps some chrome mesh panels attached to it? I'm just spit balling here, but "perfectly running" is something to cherish!

Mine:

04 GSXR 750(bolt on galore)
98 CBR 600F3(filter, pipe, adjustable cam sprokets, dyno tune)
76 KZ900A (LTD gauge pods, crash bars, LTD(style)pipes, dyna coils and ignition, headwork and mild port cleanup by cavanaugh racing, K&N filter pods, heck I dunno.

I believe that would eliminate the filter action altogether and just have the carbs running open to the atmosphere. The way the air box works is it is sealed and it forces air to flow down the inside of the filter core and then through the filter into the air box.

Don't kick a hornets nest and don't cut up an airbox.

Take it from me cuz I found
If you leave it then somebody else is bound,
To find that treasure, that moment of pleasure,
When yours, it could have been.

Thanks. That was the advice I was looking for guys. I am going to try the restrict-a-UniFilter-w/-a-Coke-can method. If that works, I will turn around and sell the airbox and make a dime.

So you are going to fubar a great running bike? Do you know how an airbox works, why it works? I don't mean to sound like an arse but really? The coke can method? Out of Red Bull? Tell you what.. sell me the airbox right now I'll give you a Quarter, that's 15 cents over asking price!!!. I'll pick up the bike later for a buck.
Seriously, just because you do not like the look of the airbox?
I'm sorry man, it's your bike....have your way with her. But it is sad.

Take it from me cuz I found

When yours, it could have been.

I'm all for pods and people modding their bike and learning about jetting etc.
but...
DON"T CUT UP THE AIRBOX! That is a big mistake for very little potential gain.

That is your means for a baseline for "running perfectly".

and...
DON"T SELL THE AIRBOX!
Since you will have to rejet when you cut up the airbox, why don't you try rejetting for pods first. If you get tired of experimenting, you can then put it all back to stock to verify the motor still runs as it should, and get back to riding.

The bike in my avatar starts great, runs great, and screams on the highway without the airbox, but it didn't happen overnight. It took months of jetting experiments (before getting a wideband o2 system). And I still have a stock airbox around in case I want to compare the pods with stock jetting.
