The big question is: "Will this mess up my carburation and lead me down the long road of swapping jets?"

I believe that would eliminate the filter action altogether and just have the carbs running open to the atmosphere. The way the air box works is it is sealed and it forces air to flow down the inside of the filter core and then through the filter into the air box.SvelteSoutherner wrote: I have a perfect running 440B with stock carbs & air box. I despise the look of the stock airbox, just not enough to go through the hassle of pods. Staring longingly at my bike, as I am prone to do, I had a thought. Cut away the part of the air box surrounding the filter and keep the front part that attaches to the carbs. Visually that would do away with 2/3's of the airbox and expose the stock filter,

Take it from me cuz I found
If you leave it then somebody else is bound,
To find that treasure, that moment of pleasure,
When yours, it could have been.

Seriously, just because you do not like the look of the airbox?
I'm sorry man, it's your bike....have your way with her. But it is sad.

but...
DON"T CUT UP THE AIRBOX! That is a big mistake for very little potential gain.
That is your means for a baseline for "running perfectly".
and...
DON"T SELL THE AIRBOX!
Since you will have to rejet when you cut up the airbox, why don't you try rejetting for pods first. If you get tired of experimenting, you can then put it all back to stock to verify the motor still runs as it should, and get back to riding.
The bike in my avatar starts great, runs great, and screams on the highway without the airbox, but it didn't happen overnight. It took months of jetting experiments (before getting a wideband o2 system). And I still have a stock airbox around in case I want to compare the pods with stock jetting.
