Fuel filter question

So I was repairing a hole in my fuel tank today and when removing the in-tank filter attached to the petcock it ripped a little. Not wanting to get any particles in my cylinders, I am wondering if I can just install an inline filter or if I should just replace the original filter. Thoughts?

You should replace the filter on the petcock if you can. It's also not a bad idea to install an inline filter just In case anything gets past the first one

How hard are these to come by? Is it something typically carried on hand at the dealership?
