Carb rejet? was created by justwannaridekz250
Just got a 1980 kz250 and want to make it into a cafe racer; long story short, I don't want that annoying looking air box filter so I got a 48mm emgo air filter pod. I've read some forums around on the internet and don't know if this will apply to my bike, but will I need to rejet the carb? I've already ordered new seals/carb cleaner and I'm going to clean the carbs out so I might as well rejet the carbs if needed. The carb and engine is running pretty good in it's condition, not to lean or anything like that, so I don't know much about the whole rejet thing. The air box that was connected to it didn't have an air filter to begin with so again with the rejeting thing and carb cleaner thing. I don't know much about the carb thing (new rider alert) so if your gonna explain it to me, you might as well explain it in new rider language.

P.S. here's the air filter I got for reference:http://www.ebay.com/itm/231117035123?item=231117035123&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME:L:OC:US:3160&vxp=mtr

Welcome aboard! I see that you are new to this board, so you would have no way of knowing, but the subject of pod air filters has been beaten to death on this website. If you put your cursor over the heading "FORUM" you will see on the right hand side of the drop-down the word "SEARCH." If you click on that and enter the word pods in the "KEYWORD" box you will find all the information anyone would ever want to know about pods. Be sure to see all the postings by searching both "A year ago an newer" and "A year ago and old" under the "Find Posts From" boxes. Here's the count that I got today. Ed

Did you install an air filter? Or are you running the bike without?

According to the diagrams at Kawasaki.com, the 1980 KZ250-D came w a CV carburetor. CV carbs can be difficult to tune for pod filters. However, your bike only has one carburetor, so it might be less complicated than a multi-carbed bike. I guess (???).

Ok, thanks for all the help. I'll keep looking around to see what I can find. Martin_csr, when i got the bike it didn't even have an air filter, just the air filter box connected to the carb with a small, circular, wire mesh. Now I don't know much about motorcycles but I'm guessing that type of setup is horrible and the engine and carb could be all gunked up. But to answer your question, I'm now running the bike with an air filter pod.

Someone over at the KZ400.com forum might be able to give you some jetting advice.
The site has a KZ250 section. The simplest thing to do would be to keep the stock airbox - the bike may run better with it. If you don't like the way it looks, it can be painted. Z650-Spirit over at the KZ650.Info site painted his airbox to look stock, but you could do something else.

I don't have any jetting recommendations, but someone here on KZR suggested adding an extender between each carb & pod filter to act as a duct, surmising that it may help to stabilize the flow of air entering the carburetor... sorta like having a velocity stack, I guess (?).

Something else to note is that the airbox acts to support the carb, so you might want to check to see if you need to rig up anything. Otherwise, the carb holder may get stressed from the carb bouncing up-n-down.
